Looking at a 402 from a 72, what's a fair price?

Hi everyone. There is a guy here that has a 402 out of a 72. He says it has 70,000 miles. It does not come with any of the accessory brackets, exhaust manifolds, or fan. What do you think a fair price is? I am not looking for the deal of the year, I just want to offer him a fair price.
Also, what do the accessory brackets and exhaust manifolds go for?

Re: Looking at a 402 from a 72, what's a fair price?

Depends, what's the compression on the motor?

Most say a core BBC is worth 500, with all the accessories.

If this is a drop in, then 750-1500.

I just spent 1375.00 rebuilding a "low mileage" 402 that was supposed to be a drop in.

The exhaust mainfolds are 65.00 bux a piece on Ebay. I just gave away a set.

The brackets and pulleys can be cheap or expensive. I am buying mine from Summit and going with billet aluminum. I have PS and a screwed up alt bracket set you can buy for 50.00 shipped.

if you can't see and hear it run, and its got no accessories, I would say $400-$500 because if you are like me, its gonna end up just being a rebuildable core to you anyway

Just keep in the back of your mind that some BB parts are hard to find especially if you are looking to make it bone stock.
I've got some including the exhaust manifolds, heat riser and pipe and air cleaner ,distributer and Q-jet .
But Like the girl I meet 40 years ago you are geographicly undiserable .

Forgot to add, I paid $600 for a 396/400 longhorn that I could have drove all the way back home(250 miles). It all depends on how bad you are looking.

68350, it is the one in Fargo. I am heading up there next week to pick up a top for my Jimmy. Do you know anything about this motor? Do you know the seller?

Re: Looking at a 402 from a 72, what's a fair price?

I just got pictures. The motor comes with the carb, intake, valve covers, heads, and harmonic balancer, internals too of course.
The part I didn't realize is that it is disassembled. On one hand I can see what everything looks like, on the other hand I can't just put it back together and through it in. I feel once it's apart you may as well clean it up, you'll need new bearing for sure, and it always takes off from there, $1,500 later you have a running motor.
So...what do you think for a disassambled 402. Worth more or less?

Re: Looking at a 402 from a 72, what's a fair price?

I would think less because you would have to put it all back together and it probably can't just be thrown in if it has been exposed to anything.

I think your looking at it right , a disassembled motor , to me means a rebuild and the $ will add up . JMO

Re: Looking at a 402 from a 72, what's a fair price?

I have 3 402.s that are complete. I have one out of a 70 pass. car that i have sold for $800.00. Needs rebuilding. It has all the ass. and pullies and brackets. That is the only one that i have for sale.
I have a complete 71 and 72 402 truck engines. One of them is a paint it and drop in ,about 50000 miles. The other is a good running engine. These are from the motor mounts up. I am missing air breather ass. It would take more than 1500.00 to buy either one of them. So it really depends on how complete and the demand for them.

Re: Looking at a 402 from a 72, what's a fair price?

Hey, If you are coming to fargo......One of the techs in our shop has an original 402. I think it's a 72 truck engine. To the best of my recolection it's got 50-60k on it and i think it's a drop in. I can put you in touch with him if you're interested in more info. I caught the 67-72 itch from him a long time ago, i'm sure he's got some other parts laying around too. We're a GM dealer about an hour and a half east of fargo.

Re: Looking at a 402 from a 72, what's a fair price?

Since you'd probably end up boring, turning the crank, rebuilding the rods, valve job, new parts, etc. I think you should look into a crate engine. I know for small blocks it's hard to do a quality rebuild (machine shop tab and parts) and save enough to justify not buying a new one anymore. Unless you just want a 402 and not a 454. IMHO the 402's I've had were underperformers. Not much zip for the extra weight.

I agree with bighead. I remember car craft once wrote that didnt like building small blocks under 300 cubes and didn't like building the 396-402 either. I think I would go 454 unless it was no.s' matching big block truck
