Rear suspension option question - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Gents,
Is a G50 option "Heavy Rear Spring" on a 72 C10 a heavy duty coil spring (with the stock trailing arm setup) or is it an optional heavy duty rear leaf spring set-up (i.e. replaces the control arms with the C30 leaf spring suspension in the back)??

I don't know for sure, but reason says if it is a coil spring truck then it is a heavy duty coil. If it also has the option for leaf spring rear suspension then it would be a heavy duty leaf. My '69 short step Chevy has the leaf option on the SPID. Note that MOST Chevrolet trucks were coil and most GMC were leaf, but that is just a general guideline.

Hmm. Thanks - never saw a HD Leaf listed on a SPID! Learn something new every day. I've also never heard of a "heavy duty coil spring" option either, which is why I was asking. I just assumed G50 was for the C30 standard leaf spring on a C10 or C20 (and that lines up with the original sales brochure wording also, but I'm just not sure). Thanks for posting.

IIRC there were some Helper springs on some trucks.They were 1/4 elliptic and mounted above the axle.They only supported the weight when it was enough to put the rear down on them.Someone should have a pic to post.

Heavy duty option on a 1/2t truck is just a bigger spring with every thing else the same. I cant find any pics right now, but you can tell the spring is bigger/thicker. It could be on swb or lwb.

Sorry to bump an old thread.

Does anyone know if the G60 Helper Springs were available only on the C10 half-ton versions? I acquired my grandpa's '67 Chevy C10 Long bed and he had bought a second frame. The truck's frame doesn't have the helper springs but the second frame does. I'm trying to determine if the frame is a C10 or a C20. Sadly there are no hubs or rear axles so the obvious 8-lug determination factor is long gone.

Thanks for any help anyone can provide.
