Temperature Gauge Problem

Since my truck had not been started since 1987 and with a new engine now, I installed another temperature gauge under the hood. I also placed a new Echlin Temp sender in the intake. The underhood gauge reads about 190 degrees and the engine feels right and is not overheating but the stock gauge just steadily goes to beyond hot before it warms up-- about 3 minutes.

Do the replacement gauges require the ground resistor on the back in the dash?

Could I have a bad gauge resistor on the original. I checked the ohms to ground on the sender when the engine is cold and then went back to NAPA and comapred another one and they resistance to ground cold is the same.

Did I get the wrong sender?

Probably to high of an ohm sender. Thats what i would say. I have had trouble with napa senders and have stuck to new old stock or similar on stuff like that.
