Frame Mfg. markings question??

I'm doing a frame off restoration on a 69 C-10 and I recorded all of the frame markings that were hand written on the frame before sandblasting it. I want to put these markings back on the frame. Does anyone know what I need to use the remark them so it will look original?????? Is there a certain color......these looked white? And who sells it?

Hey man. I use to be into Camaro restorations and Classic Industries sell's a kit to do all of the correct frame markings for a Camaro. They may sell a kit for trucks to. They also sell the markers seperate in white and yellow I think. Don't be to neet when you put the marking back on the frame. I have seen several restorations that are to "neet". Remember that the guy that put the markings on your frame had probably put on about 10,000 before your's, haha. Also, how about posting pic's of the markings. Wes.

They are just grease pencils and I think NAPA has them or I'm sure an art supply center or welding supply would have something. The one at NAPA is white or yellow and generally used for tire repair marking or for marking steel for welding or cutting . I have so far only needed white markings but a person would need a black pencil on a light color vehicle for the firewall markings. I have traced out the original markings on paper and marked a reference point to get reestablish them back just as the assembly line guy scribbled it out that day.

Hotfun,
Thanks for info. I have good clear markings on the frame but my firewall had been painted over. I noticed a low mileage 69 on a thread yesterday that had the firewall markings. Do you know if any of the numbers on the frame were duplicated on the firewall or how I could determine what the number would have been on the firewall? Thanks.

All of them had the body style/wheelbase on the passenger side upper next to the cowl. So if it was a long box fleetside it would read 10934 over there or 10734 for a shortbox fleetside. Right off hand and don't quote me but I believe those same bodystyle/frame length numbers were written on the bumper side of the last cross brace in that white grease pencil.
The last # matching show truck I built was a 66 Chevy C10 Custom Cab and it had a number of marks on the firewall which I had traced off on paper before paint removal. It had clearly visible AC and PG scribbled in the center of the cowl for air conditioning and powerglide also. It really turned out nice whith those marking duplicated on the fresh new paint. You'd swear she was right off the line.

I've had Z34 on one for a CST truck, I don't know if anything else other than the model number would be on the firewall....I seem to remember thinking that was chalk in wet paint, it sure wiped off like chalk.
But that's been quite a few years ago, can anyone confirm/deny that?

The firewall markings are grease markings for sure as I removed them with laquer thinner and still had to scrub them to get that waxy residue off before sanding the firwall.

The one's on my 68 were done in black.
One is the model number and others not shown are like a/c and 2T which may stand for two tone.

here is mine, if you look very closely, you can see the word "yellow" faintly written under the first part of the VIN# (the Y is under the K, and the E in yellow is between the K and E of the VIN#). it looks like it was written and then wiped off, but not all the way. this sure does look factory to me, but i'm not sure.

This is the only pic I have of my firewall. It is an actual snap shot, so if I am able to figure out this scanner over here (I think I have used it once in the past year or two) I may be able to blow up the area in question.
Of course, that would mean looking for the photo too.

If anyone thinks it matters, this was built in Kansas in april of 70.

Wow...that's pretty cool to have sumthin even written behind model #...and that you can still see it.

Thats kind of funny if you think about it. I can see a reason for the vin #, so they can identify it as it goes threw the assembly line. But why write "yellow" on top of yellow paint, did they have a lot of color blind workers.....:p Or do you think it was written before it was painted and leeched threw.

I found this old thread searching for something else. I think the markers they used are similar to ones used for marking wood grade in lumber mills or carpenters use, I know they are availble in black, red and yellow (colors I have in my wood working box).
