amp gauge
With my stock amp gauge, with truck off, it is showing the needle right in the middle. Is this an indication of a short somewhere, or is it saying that my battery could also not be getting charged properly? I had a loose belt.

i think that you have a short somewhere. with the ignition off all of your gauges and warning lights should not be on. since my fuel sender is all messed up if i attach the ground to my fuel gauge it shows full. personally i hate amp gauges. but thats my 2 cents

all the gauges on my truck except the speedometer and oil pressure are disconnected and replaced by seperate gauges because my battery kept running down. i went through every fuse and tested almost everything and dident find out it was the gauges till i took my cluster out to do some work and left it out for a few days, and my battery stayed up. but it would take a few days to run down. just a little rambling and input.

This thing is frustrating the hell out of me! I went to my truck tonight, and the amp gauge is showing right in the middle. So I tried to start it and it started right up. I let it run for a few minutes, turned it off and tried to start it again. All I got was the starter clicking noise.
I pulled out all my fuses one, by one and the amp needle still stood in the middle. Whats going on here? I recently cleaned my engine with some engine bright. Can some water have dripped down onto the starter and jacked something up? |

if you are any good with a multimeter i would start doing continuity and resistance checks on your wires and start looking for a short to ground. when looking for short to ground you won't have any resistance/continuity. get a multimeter that beeps when doing continuity checks. my craftsman does. hey john, i would look at the wires that connect to your gauge cluster to see if any of the wires are fried/grounding out somewhere under the dash.

 Thats the reason I went to a separate volt. gauge. It gives you information that you need.esll.

On these trucks, with everything "off", the amp gage needle should be in the middle. It goes to the left if there is useage, and to the right if charging. With the key off, put you foot on the brake, the needle should jump to the left. Start the engine, the needle should jump to the right.

just a thought.. mine would click like it was the start relay, click then no start, turns out there was no good connection on the battery post, there was no crud even, wierd I know but worth a try?
