Fleetside bed question?

I have a question about the seam between the top and bottom sections of a fleetside bedside. Every bed that I've seen has a seam between these two sections. The metal from each section folds in towards the bed and is spot welded together. I saw a '65 at a show the other day and the seam had been welded up (so I thought). When I asked him about it, he claimed that the beds came from two different plants and some were welded along the seam on the outside and some weren't. Is this true? He claimed the truck was fairly original, but I also noticed that the stake pockets were shaved. I'm thinking someone shaved the pockets and welded up the seam before he got the truck? Can anyone shed some light on this?

Re: Fleetside bed question?

According to the Factory Assembly manual, the beds were assembled in two parts with an obvious seam. I have owned fifteen '64-'66 Chevy trucks, all fleetside beds, and never saw one with no seam. I think you are right, the previous owner shaved/smoothed the seam.
