Was the Big Block available in a 1/2 ton?
Does anyone know if a big block was available in a 1/2 ton truck from 1978-1989? Everything I have read thus far (Wiki, ehow, etc) is not very accurate. Some articles state the BB was availabe until 1976 but I know that is not true because my dad bought a brand new 1977 with a 454. Other articles don't even mention the 454SS package of 1990-19??. Anyway, a guy from work said you could get it from '78-'89, you just had to pay big $ for it. I know this is really "useless trivia", but now I really want to know.

I had a factory BB 77 GMC 1/2 ton swb. I think 79 or 80 was the last years for 1/2 ton BB.

Yep, I had a 77 1/2 ton long bed 2wd,,,factory 454/400 turbo and 3.07 geared 12 bolt. Used it to tow for many years and as my loads seemed to get bigger I decided to graduate to the current 79 1 ton single axle 454 I have.

I believe it was 1980 when you could no longer get the big block in a half ton, so 1979 probably was the last year. My uncle does have a 1979 c10 that he ordered with the 454.

if memory serves me correctly they made some special edition Swb truc
ks with bucket seats as well I seen a pic a long time ago kinda cool.

It was made at least til 79. I have a parted out GMC heavy half 2wd that had a factory 454 in it....not sure if any later though..

my 79 silverado was factory 454/th400. Ol farmer blew the motor though and replaced it with a good ol 350

I emailed GM customer service with my question and they called me! The lady said she is going to forward it to the research department! I thought that was pretty cool. I will post when I find out.

this reminds me of my neighbor. he custom orders fords about every 5-7 years with the 2 tone color red on top and bottom and white down the sides. always liked the color sceme on the newer truck. heres the pattern im talking about

not related but i have a 1978 k10 with a 454, previous owner told me it was stock, decoded the vin, it orginaly came with a 350 4 barrel. from my research though the 454 was avalabile in half tons til aroun 1980. i belive it was a special order though
