Re: Rust proofing on a Daily??

I use a Carwell application yearly- about $100 on my newer vehicle but I don't drive any of my classic trucks in the winter. They use so much salt up here that I don't even take the trucks out in the spring until it has rained real good a couple of times. I don't see any Carwell locations in Ohio though. It is a sprayed on product that weeps into seams etc.

Re: Rust proofing on a Daily??

IMO, don't drive it. A cheap "beater" is better at keeping rust off of your truck.

My daily drivers would also get Fluid Film (like no moa). It's not perfect, but it does help (alot).

My profile says S.C., but I lived in ME most of my life.

Another plug for POR 15. It's a little on the pricey side, but you'll never have to put another coat on it again. Tough stuff.

Re: Rust proofing on a Daily??

Here Fluid Film is available at my local John Deere dealership. I use it on my mowers and it's a great product. A lot of farmers buy it in buckets and spray it with a 3 gallon weed/pesticide sprayer.

Por 15 does not stand up to the riggers of the salted roads in the Northeast, in fact nothing does, except daily washes and or just not driving it.

In the Augusta area, moved south about a year ago.

I learned about Fluid Film through some snowplowing sites. It sticks and holds better than waste oil. If I only needed a can or so, I'd also get it from the local John Deere dealership. (case or better, I'd order on-line)

In ME they used a sand/salt mix on the side roads, the sand would sandblast it for you, then the salt would aid in removing the metal.

Fluid film the best thing since slice bread I spray all of my cylinder block's that I have stored in the barn once a year never seen any rust on the cylinders. I do not know about for daily driving tho.I heat up a stuck nut on a bolt then hit with fluid film and ten minutes later zip it right off. It does protect threads on my classic buggy's but they are not drove in the winter.

The ultimate rustproofing trick....move to the southwest !!!!!

I can't believe the amount of rust you guy's out east have to deal with. Some of the pre--restoration pics look like the trucks were pulled out of the ocean!!!!....job security for good body and paint men.

Rarely see rust like that out here in Calif. "the land of fruits and nuts".... no matter how exposed the trucks are to the elements.

Re: Rust proofing on a Daily??

Check the underside of your doors and make sure the drain slots are not plugged up....grab that fuild film and spray it up in there....same with the rocker panels....on the back side there are also slots...make sure they are also not plugged....take the inside door door panels off once a year and clean out the bottom....and spray..... same with the cab mounts....take your seat out.... carpet or rubber mat clean dry and spray... with a daily driver you will spend twice the time keeping it clean and dry if you want to stay on top of old man rust..... enjoy driving it!!!!!!

I hold to that plan currently also, I love old car & trucks and would love to daily drive one, just want to keep it together. Thanks for the input.

Re: Rust proofing on a Daily??

We know a thing or two about rustproofing over here in the UK. My recipe would be. Underbody, steam clean, go over any surface rust with a wire wheel. Then zinc rich primer followed by a couple of good coats of chassis black paint (usually a synthetic enamel although theres a couple of good epoxy paints I may try on my truck when I get to that stage) Anywhere vulnerable to stone chipping like the inside of the wheel wells gets a coat of stone chip/underbody schutz, a flexible latex based product, then the whole lot gets a coat front to back of an underbody wax like Bilt-Hambers Dynax UB. All box sections like the rockers etc get a coat of a cavity wax like Bilt-Hambers Dynax S50. Bodywork just plenty of good quality wax. Make sure you wash underneath regularly to remove the salt.

Re: Rust proofing on a Daily??

Salt eats everything up no matter what you do. It's in the water and gets into the slightest crack or seam and eats between layers every time it gets wet. Just because it washed up in these crevasses doesn't mean it will wash out because it never catches a direct blast and the areas where it lays don't drain. The salt lies in the sediment left in voids. The sediment holds moisture. It makes it's own drain holes. If you try to seal all the seams, all it takes is one small breech and what you used to seal salt out will hold it in.

Re: Rust proofing on a Daily??

Thats why we use wax, it creeps into seams, is actually slightly self healing so if it gets scratched it'll seal it self and it stops the salt water getting into seams and cracks. When I replaced the rocker on my truck it got a good blast of wax inside so it'll never rust from the inside out. I use a two foot long flexible tube with a 360 degree nozzle on the end, you insert it into a cavity, drilling a hole if neccesary and then withdraw it whilst spraying giving it a twirl along the way. The wax I use comes in a big rattle can, stand it in a bucket of warm water so its nice and runny when you spray and it gives a fantatsic coating. This stuff has been salt spray tested and gets used by industry on oil rigs etc.

Re: Rust proofing on a Daily??

You wax up under your truck on the body mounts and all those seams where it rusts? The places I'm talking about rusting out are bare metal. The back side of the areas that rust never had any paint and there's no way to get any on there. When you weld in rockers and such, whatever coating you put on the back gets burned off. And,the heat on metal from welding encourages rust. Like a car that burned. First hint of moisture and it's rusted uniformly. Believe me,I tried running trucks in the winter and used all sorts of ideas. I felt I was destroying them and that's when I stopped.
