2 questions to help me get back on the road

Hi all,

I have 2 questions I hope I can get some help with:

1. I swapped the v-6 out of my 67 GMC for a 350. I am curious as to what other members used for a lower radiator hose. My radiator has a near 90 degree bent in the outlet so finding a hose to run from there to the water pump has proved to be tricky. I tried flex hose but it kinks at the water pump inlet. Any thoughts...

2. Anyone ever seen a tailshaft housing for a turbo 400 trans without the connection for the speedometer cable? I got mine all bolted in and ready to go and of couse that is when I realized it! There is NOWHERE to plug the speedo cable in! Are these tailshaft housings readily available somewhere? The 2 junkyards near me did not have them.

Getting frustraded because these 2 minor inconveniences have held me up from getting the truck on the road...

Thanks all

Look for a lower radiator hose for a 71 c 10 with a 350

Check your local trans shop for a used tail shaft housing are you sure the hole just does not have a plug in it?

hubscrub,

Does the outlet for the lower hose on your radiator bend up to a 90 degree or is it straight?

Re: 2 questions to help me get back on the road

The speedometer goes into the left rear side of the main transmission case, not into the tail housing. It could have a soft plug in the hole if it was a 4 wheel drive transmission.its almost a 2" hole, there should be a steel gear pressed onto the tail shaft just behind the governor gear.

It does appear mine has a plug in the hole (almost looks like a freeze plug?). Once I remove that I presume there is some type of adapter or insert I will need to get in order to connect the speedo cable correctly?

There are two different adapters depending on what speedometer driven gears you are using. One is for 36 through 39 tooth driven gear and one is for 40 through 43 tooth.

Re: 2 questions to help me get back on the road

16N67,

Once I get the plug out, how do I determine which adapter I need? Are they readily available somewhere?

Thanks again!

Some are still available from GM, and aftermarket transmission part supplier's. You need to know what rear end gears you have to determine what speedometer gears you will need. Some of the newer 400's had plastic drive gears, instead of steel, that are held on with a clip, easier to change.
