Re: How to hook up HEI

yeah i read where you said it was fried. i just thought that would be a good place to start since they made the thing. could be some additional timing settings, and so forth that need to be considered. here's something else i found off that same website.

Re: How to hook up HEI

One is for ignition and the other goes to the tach if equipped.

There should be 3 wires (some have 4) coming from the base of the HEI that plugs into the cap. The most outward connectors on the cap are for ignition and the tach.

Re: How to hook up HEI

That distributor was converted. I bet theres no module at all. Those wires coming out are for the magnetic pickup to trigger the msd box. I doubt theres a module inside that distributor. Thats not the normal way to hook up an msd box. Someone went way too far for no reason and it probably has something to do with you cooking the box.

I don't remember if you can just drop in a module with those. I can't remember what the inside looks like.

A replacement module from a parts store wouldn't contain the factory harness (the one that plugs between the module and the cap).

Check out this harness/module package from Speedway: clicky.

I would replace the coil & cap as well.

Thanks for the link, that's what I couldn't remember, the "pickup" and plug configuration.

.....and BTW, stock modules are cheap, buy an extra one and throw it in the glove box. While on the side of the road on wet rainy night you'll be glad you have a spare. Plus, having a spare keeps the one in the HEI from retiring early. LOL.

Re: How to hook up HEI

You have it already. Thats the two wires hanging out of the distributor. It plugs into the plug for the magnetic pickup under the cap that used to plug into the hei module then plugs into the two wire trigger plug on the msd box. If you cooked the msd box theres a good chance you have another issue in the truck. They are very stable when the rest of the wiring is correct. The box should always be unplugged when charging the battery or every hooking up battery cable. They need a good ground as well.
