Another item for the Rarest of the Rare I haven't heard anyone mention

For those of you that are familiar with my for sale posts you know I find A LOT of stuff! Owning 2 77 GMCs I had heard that intermittant wipers existed but they were hard to find since they were one year only and an option. I finally found one of these and thought I would share. It is NOT the same as the 78 and newer set ups!

Is it '77 only? I don't know if it was available '76 & earlier.

As far as I know it was 1977 only. Have you seen them earlier? I have a GM parts catalog for 73-77 and it only shows 1977

Our '76 is not delay, my '83 is. I do not recall seeing any before '77ish, I have the same catalog too...just boxed up a few hundred miles away.

I think '77 was the first year. I do know that the factory gauge bezel on the intermittent wiper trucks is clearanced a little to clear the knob.

I did some checking -

I checked the general info packets in the GM Heritage Center for intermittent wipers; no mention was made in 1976 or prior. I should mention that those packets did not have the free flow listing of RPOs like the later model years had (two speed wipers were mentioned in the Interior description text).

For '77 - it does show intermittent wiper as available, under RPO CD4.

Will that kit convert a 75 or 76 to intermittent wipers without having to change the wiper motor.

Don, since I do this for living I hit wrecking yards all over the place. I go to Colorado, California and of course AZ wrecking yards to find what I find. I have family and friends in CA and CO so I always have a place to stay. Just kind of make a working vacation out of it.

For a short period of time I had a chevy 'nomad' panel van that had one of those. I was under the impression that the van was an '82. I could be wrong though (it didn't have round headlights)

This piece is 1977 specific! The 1978-1983 looked similar but had different wiper motors and a clear face instead of black. There are a TON of 78 and new intermittant wiper switches but they won't work on the 77 and earlier trucks.

Well, if you sell it to me then you don't have to agonize over which truck doesn't get it...

You ever come across the AM/FM/CB radio?

That is an interesting perspective! I see it as I will just have to hit the yards that much harder and find another! I am sure it won't be any time soon! I have found a TON of stuff and this is the only one of these I have came across. I was specifically looking for one of these though. Hated the regular style wipers even if it RARELY rains in the Phoenix area! I have found the CBs. There was one on CL here in town for a while. Never followed up on it. I think it was $35.

Re: Anoter item for the Rarest of the Rare I haven't heard anyone mention

Let me know if you find another CB. (and intermittent too :-)

The original owner that I bought my K5 from was a electronics engineer for Honeywell and made his own variable intermittent system that was still hooked up when I bought the truck from him. Unfortunately it didn't work and so I yanked it.

Generally we only need the intermittent in the winter/spring rains like we had a few weeks ago. Summer time it comes down so hard the wipers are going full bore anyway! Or as full bore as they will go.
