72 GMC 4X4 help needed

-
Hi guys & gals,

I usually hang out on the 67-72 trucks board but I have a couple of 4X4 questions....

I looked at a '72 GMC 4x4 this morning and I really think I am going to buy it but I wanted to ask a couple of questions since I don't have any experience with 4X4's. I think there were two different axle types, Dana and Eaton, If so is one type more desirable than the other? Anything I should look closely at on the running gear? It has a rebuilt 350 with 5 miles on it and a rebuilt TH350 trans. He drove it from the shop to the storage unit.

The bodywork was professionally done and I know the guy that did it, so there is no problem there. The whole underside of the truck was professionally undercoated also. It is in a storage unit that is almost impossible to get into but there is nothing leaning against the truck. It is covered with a thick layer of dust so it is hard to see the color. It is painted Pewter with the lower portion charcoal.

The truck is only 17 miles from me and he said he would deliver it. Sorry I couldn't get any better pictures. He said if I was really interested we could drive it out of the unit so I could listen to it run and take a closer look at it. (stuff would have to be moved to do that) It is a really clean truck.

Here is an e-mail I got from the guy:

leon,

I left town for awhile today, sorry for the delay. The truck is a 1972 GMC 4x4 1/2 ton w/air. I started this truck being a frame off restoration. The frame has been bead blasted and finished with epoxy. It has new door skins, rockers, cab corners, floor pans and inner fender wells. The whole underside of the truck has been undercoated as well. It also has a new windshield and new sliding rear window. The motor has been completely rebuilt and I also put a matched intake, cam and lifter set along with a new carburator. It has a New 2-1/2" suspension lift and new aluminum wheels with new 33" tires. The front bumper is original and in good a shape, the back bumper is brand new. The only thing that is left is basically put the grill in place and install the lights. As far as the inside goes it has been painted but it also needs put back together. I do have new kick panels and door covers, I believe, some where. The fenders were original and in good shape & the hood looked brand new. The tailgate was in mint condition before it was painted, also. I would like to sell it at $4000.00 - $5000.00. Thanks.

Larry

I talked to him again and he said he would sell it to me for $4000 cash but wouldn't take any less.
I have no problem putting it back together so the only expense I would have would be for carpet, dash pad, seat cover, and some misc. stuff. The guy that did the body work said he knows for a fact that the owner has close to 8k in it with what he paid for the truck and the work he has had done to it. What do you guys think? Thanks.

Sorry for the long post...

Re: 72 GMC 4X4 help needed

looks nice... 1/2 ton would have a dana 44 in the front and possibly a 12 bolt in the rear. GMC had some different axles so maybe even a dana 44 in the rear (i've seen 2WD with that)... dana 60 and HO52 were 3/4 ton axles.

$4k for a complete truck? painted? sounds like a good deal to me...

I would put a rubber mat inside for the 4wd "tough truck" feel ($80 or so from board vendors).. If it turns over and runs then it's a steal...

I don't buy 'em, sell 'em, or price 'em (had mine since 1977) but with all that's been done to that truck, $4k sounds like a great deal. If you don't grab it, someone else will and you'll kick yourself for years...

Thanks for the replies. I think I will call him in the morning. I have kind of been wanting a 4X4 and this will probably be my best chance...

Sounds like a great deal to me. I would bet there is way more than $4000 in paint and body work alone. You could put another $1000 in it and have a very nice truck!!

Hope you get it.

From the limited pics it sure looks nice - looks very clean. You better get on top of this, get it out so you can inspect and have cash in your pocket. You might just be looking at a bargain of a truck!

Well, I just got off the phone with the owner of the truck so I'm going up this evening and help him dig it out so I can look at it closer and hear it run. I will put the camera in the truck now so I don't forget it....

It runs?
If this is a solid, no bondo truck that's a hell of a deal.

I have 4K alone in rust repair and it's not even painted.

I bought the truck this afternoon. It runs great. We didn't pull it out of the storage unit because he can't deliver it until late tomorrow afternoon so we would have had to put the truck and all of the other stuff back in there..... I brought some of the loose stuff home with me though. Should have some good pics tomorrow night. Thanks for all of the input.

Wow Leon, that sounds like an awesome deal. I can't wait to see the pictures once you have it all back together. When will those pictures come?

Thanks.

I hope to have it put back together this month. There really isn't too much to do but I do want to update a couple of things. (new seat cover & put a tach dash and tilt column in it that I have).

Sounds like you have a fun month ahead of you. You get to put on the finishing touches, but got to forego a lot of the painstaking work, not to mention got to save thousands of dollars on the whole deal.

Definitly get some good "before and after" pics . It's always a great feeling when you know you have gotten a great deal such as this.

OK, here is a pic on the trailer and some after I washed all of the crud off of it.... I need to get the pressure washer out and do the bottom side tomorrow. The inside really looks bad but it isn't as bad as it looks. I did some checking last night and I have almost everything to finish it. It did come with all new seals and weatherstrips, and new pieces for the front edge of the fenders. Now the fun begins...

looks nice, do those front tires rub? looks really close in the pics.

I would go with the rubber floor mat but that's my style in a 4WD...

and an original steering wheel too!
