How can I easily tell if its a dana 60 front end and what would one that is in working order be worth?

Re: dana 60

depends. there were 2 versions i believe, a balljoint type and king pin type.

kingpin is worth more i believe.
good working order ive seen 800-1200

balljoints i think go for 500-900 id say.

driverside drop were fords and passenger side drop were gm/dodge

there should be a stamp on the pumpkin ear, on the front of the axle nearthe bottom. usually driver side. should have a "60"

d44 has "44" stamped

Re: dana 60

Easiest way on a gm 60 is to look to see how the passenger spring is attached, 1 or 2 u bolts see photo.

Re: dana 60

military issue trucks are the real winners. they came stock with 1 ton axles and 4:56 gears and sometimes a posi. locker in the rear with matching gears.

Re: dana 60

I know I always am looking at the military pick-ups on ebay just because of their drivetrain. Well I had a 85 blazer 2 years ago with 1 ton running gear and a 454 I sold it to a friend who then inturn sold it to another friend that let it deteriorate and blew the 454 and got the truck taken of the road do its rust and is now sitting in a local scrap yard. Im hoping the running gear is still under it. fingers crossed!

Re: dana 60

I saw about 4 military K30's at the dealers auto auction the other day. They looked like they were mid 80's trucks. I just drove by it I wish I knew how much they went for. I'd think those ones would be best anyway they dont get abused as badly as a work truck might.

Re: dana 60

4 easy ways to tell a d60 from a d 44/10b.

1 d60 has the above mentioned 2 studs and 3 u bolt.
dodge d44's had a similar setup but they are completely different out side of that.

2 4" locking hub. the d44/10b hub is only 2.5" in diam.

3 kingpins, gm d60 only had kingpins, no balljoints, ever, never happend, never made, do not exist.

4 second bump on cover. the d60 has a pronouced bump on the cover were the fill plug is located. the d44 is on a smooth portion and the 10 is egg shaped.

how to tell a dodge d60 from a gm one.

1 the shock mounts, a dodge d60 has a single flat bar that stand straight out off the tube, gm uses a stamped steel one mounted on an angle.

2 the d side spring perch, the dodge is cast iron and about 2.5" tall. the gm one is stamped steel and about 1.5" tall.

3 the brake lines, dodge will have a hard line mounted to the axle with short soft lines. a gm will have long soft lines going to the frame.

modern d60 vrs older d60s'

all modern and ball joint d60 are drivers side carrier.

a kingpin dodge and gm are passenger side and only ford is driver side.

most modern d60s have unit bearings and vac operated hubs,

king pin will only have manual locking or rarely the auto locking like a 10bfront.

Re: dana 60

Most of what has been posted here is correct. I've had 1 or more Dana 60 equipped GM trucks continuously since 1977, all 1 tons. I currently have 2, again.
The 1 ton 4x4's from 1977-79 had full time hubs, regardless of transmission. I know this made no sense but, was true. I installed Husky Selectro hubs on mine.
Starting with my 1980, they have had Spicer Lockouts.

Not as many people needed 4x4 heavy duty trucks where the weather is nice! There's tons of D60's around here but there still not cheap. I bet up in Minnesota, North Dakota and Wisconsin there's lots of K30's in the junkyards.

When I was up in northern Minnesota on a fishing trip I swear every towtruck I saw was a 4x4... Not very common in SE Nebraska to see 4x4 Medium Duty wreckers!

Re: dana 60

went to another scrap yard today and asked if they had any d 60's and they said they had some and I told him I wouldnt mind 4:56 and he said he would get back to me. he called later while I was out and said $1800 for a front and $500 for a matching rear. Im not sure if he meant rebuilt or what but I spit up my drink a lil when I heard that considering I see m1008 going for $2-4k. Ill have to call back and see what the exact details are but I know I wont spend that on it.

That is crazy. It would be cheaper to drive to Md to purchase one.

Re: dana 60

Jeez I have one for $500 and can't sell it. I dont' know how or who the idiot is that would buy one for that price. Even the Boyce ones are ridiculous. It doens't cost that much to rebuild one, not hard either.

Re: dana 60

I bought 3 this summer. One I paid $300 drw, so so shape also got the matching c&c rear with that one for that price. One srw, $600 excellent condition. I also got another srw that I traded a 14 bolt and dana 44 for. Sometimes its even cheaper just to buy the whole truck.

Do you know much about the Super 60's found in the 99 up F-450's? I know a little about them but am wondering if they are used in anything else as in ag or man lift or trenching equipment?

The Stupid Duty's aren't as desirable as the older ones. They have unit bearings and balljoints that aren't as strong as kingpins. More expensive to go crossover. The centers are pretty much the same, still high pinion, but that's aboot it.
