Interesting, I didn't know they used 348/409 engines in big trucks.

They did, but the blocks are a little different. They are definately a "built for torque" engine. They will fit into a car but, like I said, they are a bit different.

First off, they used a "notched" block for lower compression. There was a valve notch at the top of the combustion chamber. They also used "notched" heads to help with the lowering of compression. The truck '09s had 7.75:1 compression where even the lowest horsepower passenger '09 (340 hp) had 10.25:1 compression. There were also other differences like the oil pan's drain plug points straight down, etc, etc. While they are still cool, they unfortunately wouldn't do much good in a car.

We had a 348 in our 62 COE firetruck,damn good engine !We called it a "W" head or "M" head depending on how you were looking at it !It would do 75mph on the interstate without a problem ,It had a huge 4 barrel carb too !

We ended up selling this 1962 truck in the Mid 80's to a dept in Mossey Head Florida.They drove it from Peru NY to Florida ,only thing to go wrong was the Alt/gen died! Hows that for a reliable truck!

I may be buying a '72 C-60 firetruck from a local fire department this fall when they get their new tanker truck. The truck has a 427 td with 4bbl, 5speed trans, 2 spd rear end, and air brakes!!! It only has 17,000 miles on it and has been stored in the temp. controlled fire house since new, and yes the interior is red. It's in immaculate condition, my dad and I were thinking about yanking off the aluminum tank and 1500gph pump and putting a custom flatbed on the back to haul 1-2 cars. We thought it would be a pretty cool way to transport matching '72 chevelle ss and
el camino SS to shows.
