My wiring started frying?!?!?!?

Yesterday I left my lights on when I got home and realized it last night. My battery was dead. I decided to jump it off a battery that I took out of the MG that was still good. I got it all hooked up and went to go start it, but before I could do it I heard a popping noise and saw smoke. I went around to the engine and there was smoke coming from the battery and the fusible link by the battery was GLOWING RED. I unhooked the cables (they weren't even hot) and rechecked my connections. They all appeared good. I hooked it up again, and it started smoking. Needless to say I was freaking out. WTF?! Well I reluctantly went and got the wifes car and decided to jump the truck off it and pray it didn't fry her electrical. I hooked it up and the truck started right up! I figure something must have been wrong with the other battery. Do you suppose that beause th MG was wired Positive to ground that it screwed something up in the battery? The fusible link didn't break connection, it just got glowing hot. I still can't figurre out what happened. No other fuse blew and everythng else works fine. The fuses for the ammeter didn't even blw. I'm seriously confused.

sounds like the battery shorted out or it had reversed polarity.

Must have been reverse polarity since the battery came out of the MG and it was wired for Positive to ground. Crazy ass British Electrical! (No offense to any Britains on the board)
