Question Edelbrock 1406 help!!!!

I have a 1406 on my truck and it runs a little rich, and I was wondering how I could fix this problem???? Someone also had told me to get a Metering Rod/ Jet kit, well I did and the bad part is that the rods that are in my carb are bigger than the ones in the kit, they are the biggest ones available, so now what?????

did you get edelbrock #1480 for the calibration kit. Look in the manual that came with the carb, b/c it allows you to lean it out pretty much. I have a 1407 and I wish I had something different. I have my idle/mixture screws out about two full turns each, and it seems to do pretty well.

I got kit# 1487 it is for the 1406 carb. Mine already has the .075 x .047 rods in it, the biggest available in the catalog. And the biggest that the kit goes to is .073 x .047.

You'll have to replace the jets too.

Another thing is your fuel pump. Are you sure it's providing 5.5 - 6.5 psi? Stock fuel pumps can sometimes provide too much fuel...

get the book...

get hold of the book that comes with the carb. what i did was reveiw what i had currently, then went to the book for the leaner jets& rods, then did a quick consult with edelbrock. also do you have to have a smog test? pollution control stuff here requires us to have limits on CO2 etc. good luck. oh yeah, do you have an HEI? really helps with a hotter burn.

like COBALT said you will probably have to replace the jets also if you have the kit ,put .095 primary jets and 073-047 rods that will get you 5% leaner from stock. if it is still too rich them got to .092 jets with 070-047 rods that will get you 8% leaner. you may also want to put a lighter springs on the rods.

I have a basically stock engine and I am running mine at the 14 spot on the graph. Your carb comes from the factory at the 1 spot.

Nevada70, we don't even have a veichle inspection in Arkansas anymore. And I am running an HEI with the plugs gapped at .045, it was at .035 and I regapped them but I couldn't tell any difference. I also have the book for the carb, but I don't really understand much of it. Bill, so you are saying to go to a smaller rod with different jets?? Now I am confused, how will that lean it out?? If you can't already tell I know jack sh!t about carbs!! I know how to bolt them on and hook them up, that's about it!!

By the way I haven't changed any rods or jets since I got it. What I meant earlier is that it already had the biggest rods available in it when I got it.

Go to edelbrock's web site they have a troubleshooting section, if that doesn't help you can call their tech line which is also listed on their website sometimes there is a pretty lomg (on hold) phone wait but they have helped me in the past.....kc

I would e mail their tech department. The guy that help me, sent me everything I needed for FREE! Yes, thats correct, FREE jets and needles.

ok...

ok, so it wasn't new when you bought it, right? call edelbrock tech support and they will give you the stock configuration for the jets and rods and springs. it is really simple, heck i even did it , the stock configuration may be lean enough. if not, then again call tech support, give them the altitude of where you live and they will help as far as a suggestion to go to leaner jets and rods and springs. hey, the best thing about these trucks is it is a learn as you go and all the wisdom from this board. i haven't destroyed anything yet just take your time and have fun...

Ok, I spoke with the guy at Edelbrock and he said to check the fuel pressure, if it was ok then check the float level, check for a hole in the float or debris on the needle or in the seat. So how can I check the fuel pressure, and where can I get a regulator and how much for one???

Ok, I checked the floats and adjusted them, checked for holes (none), and I checked for debris( looked almost like mud) in the float bowls and some rust also, now I need to know how to check the pressure and where to get a regulator and a guage fairly cheap.

Are you running an electric fuel pump?, If not pressure should not be the problem .

Bill, no I am just running a stock pump, but the guy at Edelbrock told me that sometimes it could still put out too much pressure for the carb. Like I said I don't know jacksh!t about a carb, just that it is running rich and I have no idea how to fix it. The carb came with the largest rods Edelbrock has, the jets I have no idea because they have nothing stamped on them to indicate their size, so I don't know what to do!!!????!!??

The stock 1406 ,should have ,.098 Main jets and .095 secondary jets, the rod should be 075X 047 .

You stated it looked like mud in the float bowl , Do you have a fuel filter in the fuel line ?

if you have the book just look at the chart for the 1406 and install the rod and jets to lean the carb out . I would start with bullet #7 which is .095 main jets and 073x047 rods .
What makes you think the carb is running too rich ,?

because at idle it smells of raw gas and occasionally smokes and occasionally will flood out and die.

Don't think of them as smaller rods. Lets talk about the gas smell . Float level or sticky needle and seat is what I would look at.
When it idles do you see any gas coming out of the accelerator pump rod hole?

nope no gas out of accelerator pump hole, and I checked the floats for holes and for the 7/16" gap, and I cleaned the needles, seats, rods, and jets with carb cleaner, gas and compressed air, so I don't think that is the problem, the raw gas smell is coming from the exhaust.

Have you pulled the spark plugs to see what they look like ,are the sooty black or wet. ?
