Bumper shave progress
Bumper progress. Lights are fitted and mounting bolts are studded in. Now I'm doing the finish grinding on the welds...
  I'm looking for a chrome shop to do the finish prep work and chrome it. Any recommendations? Kenneth

The lights themselves are indeed LED boards I built, but they're not in the picture yet. What you see is a piece of amber Lexan that's been glued up on a piece of clear Lexan with articulations in it... like the stuff they use in flourescent light fixtures to diffuse the light.
 Doing it that way helps to avoid the dot dot dot look of LEDs.Same for the rears...   And the rear boards look like this...   Kenneth

Nice Job! I'll be doing that (smoothing, not the lights) to my 56 front bumber and grill. Any gottcha's? Any advice. Thanks and keep posting pics please.

My email at the house is down for a bit, I spent all week moving and the computer is still in pieces and the crappy Walmart service I have won't let me check email from the web. XXL the bumpers & flush signals look slick. Please don't take this as criticism but you should weld in some reinforcement plates for the bumper studs instead of just the bolt heads being welded to the actual bumper. I've done that w/both chrome & powder coating & learned the hard way that w/ the slightest over-tightening of the bolts or almost any light impact, it distorts the plating. If it doesn't happen immediately then all it takes is the right bump in the road & you'll start to see dimples where the studs were because the majority of stress is isolated to the tips of the bolts. Try & weld some 3/16 or 1/4" plate to the back of the bumper & weld the studs to the plate. This way any stress is isolated to the plates at the edges of the bumper & not in the center of the fresh chrome or powder-coating you just spent your hard earned $$ on. I would hate to see such a nice job get ruined.

I just got an email "we don't want your business" quote from Advanced Plating for $750.
I didn't want to buy a chrome shop... just get the bumper chromed. Anyone have any chrome shops they'd recommend? Thanks in advance, Kenneth

I've given up on the chrome shops. They all want one arm, one leg, AND my left huevo. And since powdercoating is out due to the usual color match issues, I've decided to paint the bumper. I've actually done this several times over the years and it worked out OK, except for the rock chips that tend to collect over time. I spoke with Mark Albrecht at RestoMotive Laboratories (the POR-15 people) and he tells me that their "Glisten" clearcoat product is tough as nails and will save my bumper paint from rock chips. It sounds a little "salesman-ish" but I've going to give it a try. I've finally got the bumpers prepped for color, and as soon as I can get by the store and pick up some paint, I'll put some color on them. And, if anyone's wondering... I gave up on my previous plan of '71 Food Grabber Blue with yellow-to-orange-to-red flames in favor of 2001 Chevy Torch Red. I may put some real light flames on it still (like a 'ghost' flame using Flip-Flop or Kameleon or similar). Anyway... bumper pics...
