I am trying to figure out how to install a clean stereo system,I have an uncut dash ,no interior yet and want to stay away from cutting doors or adding those kick panel speakers

They are high-dollar, but www.tuffyproducts.com has security stereo consoles. I'll probably go this route if I can't get one of my buddies to fab up a custom one.

I cut the dash in my truck, but you could do same install with a dual shaft knob radio or put in console etc. like others have done. I installed a 10" sub under passenger side of seat and separates in the doors. You cut the panel and a hole behind it, but a new door panel and all signs of speaker are gone!

I have not heard good things about the sound quality of the stock lookalike systems in LMC. I believe they are custom auto sound (http://www.customautosound.com/). This is all hearsay, so do your own research.

In the first pic Bouncytruck posted that's
a universal under dash cover for any stereos
you want to install. It works great in the console.
If you cant find one there is a shop here in FT.W.TX.
that has them for about 20.00-25.00 bucks

LMC stereo

Here is a pic of the LMC stereo that was mentioned earlier.
You get to keep your dash intact.
It came with my blazer and sounds great with the crossfire amps the guy before me put in. Not sure what it will do on its own.
The down side is you are very limited if you like to "play" with settings as you only have a bit of adjustment on the knobs on the arms.

I thought they were just CD changer controlers. I think you need to buy their changer to work with the head unit.

As far as the qualitity, I'm just restating what I have read on the board. Do a search on the board and see what you find.

Sound System

I built my sub box out of fiberglass and mounted two 10's in it. While the cab was stripped down prior to paint, mounting brackets were welded into the cab corners and panels were made to mount 6" Fosgate mids. Two four inch Fosgates were mounted under the dash in the original speaker location. Amps and an electronic crossover were mounted under the seat. I did cut the dash as I was'nt concerned with originality...System hits really hard and is crystal clear.

I have the custom autosound system in my 68. All of their stuff is rebadged kenwood, so not bad quality. Being that our vehicles are not the quietest, you really need a couple amps and some good speakers. However, mine doesn't sound bad with no amps and some good quality (polk audio) door speakers.

I wouldn't knock the quality but they are overpriced. Of course, they are also one of the few places that carries setups that don't require cutting the dash or a little creativity.

Pretty sure you can use any "old style" type knob on them. All the control posts are the same IIR. Just pull off and replace.

I've seen a lot of ideas of where to put the head unit, but I'm interested (I think the original poster is too) in how you guys are mounting your speakers. What speakers are you running and where? I'm not too excited about cutting up my doors either.

I just finished installing the head unit and a 6 disk changer in the console similar to the picture I posted above. I'm very pleased with how the install turned out.

For now, I'm running just some 6x9's in some of the cheap-o, carpet covered boxes. Eventually, I'd like to build some custom boxes along the side that will look like a continuation of my aux gas tanks. Maybe some kick panel speakers too. I've been thinking about a couple of tweeters in the factory dash location so they are hidden, but I'm not sure how that would sound. I'd like to hide as much as possible and not cut anything.

Speakers, etc

In my old 76 K5 i built a kick-ass center console that housed my in-dash and my amp... the truck wasn't built stock so i didnt have to worry about that too much, but it looked cool. as far as the speakers, I had a 64 Corvair once (dont laugh) that i built 'wedges' that were tucked under the dash kinda, you couldnt see them unless you bent down and were looking for them...
as far as the back goes... ive seen it before where they'd build a box to fit around the wheel well, if you do it right, it would look pretty cool.
my dumbass put a huge bandpass box in back with 2- 15's and kept on blowing out my back window... i wouldnt suggest that!!!

wish i would have taken pictures of it... but i do have some from a council i built for my old 80 chevy pickup... ill try and round those up and post them for ya!

Hope my rambling helped a little bit!
