Gas Sending Unit O Ring

I ordered a new sock strainer, O-ring and a new plastic float for the 72'.
My in cab tank is clean and the sender unit is in excellent condition.
The sock strainer however was splitting at it's seam so I ordered the above parts.
I forgot to notice the orientation of the O-ring tab l when I removed the sender rings and seal.
Does the little tab on the rubber O-ring need to be installed in a certain clock position or not?
Is that tab just a finger grab?
Thanks, Sam
