Fuel Tank Question

I know, I know, there is a thread in the FAQ section. I read most of it, but it gets lengthy with the chit chat and not many show how they did theirs with pics. If I'm going to take my tank out to do some welding\cutting on my floors and rockers, I might as well look at the option of moving the tank. I have the bed off, so that won't be an issue. My problem is I'm somewhat of a purist and would like to keep the filler cap where it is or have a hidden one with the original one remaining for looks.

What has worked for you guys and tell me if you think that is crazy.

ummm, just get that rear mount gas tank from LMC and put that one in. I actually just installed mine this weekend and got the fuel lines run and everything hooked up. Pretty simple install.

Still in the works (timewise) is the plan to build my own rear tank...One that utilizes the space between the frame rails and about 4-6" below the frame it self.

well, as of right now, I have no bed on my truck...so it's not really a problem right now. But, I think I'm gonna make it come through the bed

hey joe, did you have to remove the rear crossmember(the one about 5 to 6" from the end of the frame rails) to install the LMC tank kit?

This is where my fuel tank is set up, mounted on the frame rails. The PO installed it, so I'll get under the truck sometime soon and get some better pictures and measurements. The filler pipe is under the bed and has a latch that opens up.

Put down a second request for pics of the LMC tank install.
I been thinking about going that route.

Also been thinking of either a K-5 Blazer tank from a carb model or an S-10 Blazer tank if they ever came in a carb model.

I wonder how fuel tanks are measured? If they say 30" W does that mean from tip of flange to tip of flange, or just the side walls of the tank?

Late 70's early 80's 1/2 ton Chevy Van tank. 3X4 angle welded to the end of the frame rails. Front cross member trimmed. See pic. Gas door from 88'-98' Chev pickup. Very easy install with factory look.

hey, how many gallons is it?
what are you doing for a gauge?
are those straps from the same van?
think i asked before, but, how far from the bottom of the frame does it hang?
I really like your install.....very clean

Joe, I think it is about 16-20 gallons. I am using the factory gauge. Those are the straps from the van and, the tank hangs down 5-1/4" below the frame rails.

Can't remember where i saw it, but someone did a frame mount tank and ran the filler up behind the taillight. The taillight hinged out to fill the tank. I thought it was a cool way of hiding the filler and since you want to make yours look like it is still factory it may solve that issue.

Joe, I am using the van sender and have not tried to hook the gauge up yet. I will tackle that at a later date. I don't think it will be a problem.

Nice clean install 502 !!!!

For those wondering about an aluminum tank, I used one on my customers '67 Rolling chassis build. Pricey tank, but worked out sweet. Here are a few pics...click the link in my sig for even more pics.

Nice Looking tank. Boy, you are right, those aren't cheap, but look good and the taper allows it to be a little more attractive from the rear.

I also give up...trying to read the tape that is. Who is that from John?

How are the tanks measured, from edge of flanges or from side of tank? If from tank, are the flanges all pretty much the same width?
