Want to bolt a 73-87 style P/S box to a 64 GM

I wonder if anyone has done this or if there is a kit out there.

My buddy has a 64, 1 ton, 2wd Chevy. He is converting the front end over to the 73 - 87 suspension, brakes and steering. Most is bolt on, but not the steering box. His present set up is a manual steering box and the frame is missing the contours of the later style frame which allows the power steering box of the 73 - 87 vintage to bolt up.

Anyone have any ideas? Any kits out there that would do the trick?

Thanks,

Eric M.

Some people heat the frame and indent it and some people make a set of spacers to go between the box and the frame for clearance. If you use the spacers make sure the longer bolts are grade 8...

Thanks LocDoc,

Any preference to which method might be better. I hear heating the frame makes it brittle, but spacers can't be as solid a connection as bolting directly to the frame?

Have others welded the spacers to the frame?

Thanks,

Eric M.

Re: Want to bolt a 73-87 style P/S box to a 64 GM

we built a 63 4x4 for my nephew and used an intergal box off a 70 up 4x4. we machined spacers for the outside AND used a section of another 69 up frame on the inside of his frame. we also used a 69 up steering shaft with the flexible joint instead of the solid oem shaft.

That might be the way to go, graft on a section of frame from the 73 - 87 style trucks.

Someone on CK5 mentioned a kit but couldn't remember who made it. Anyone ever hear of such an item?

Thanks,

Eric M.
