My front speakers, under the dash pad, are shot. To pull the dash pad off, do I have to remove the gauge surround? Also, this way I will have the speakers ready to mount, what is the stock size of the front speakers so I can buy them ahead of time? This is an 87 silverado.

yes on gauge...
3.5" speakers.

And the center is 4X10, same as the back two in my 83.

Go to crutchfield.com and go thorough their "vehicle specific" equipment routine.

you need a 1/4" socket and a phillips screwdriver and a nubby phillips screwdriver to take off the dash pad and the guage surround the speakers are held in with 1/4" sheet metal screws.. you may wanna bring out a shop vac and clean under there too cause after a few years it gets real dirty when you take the dash pad off

Didn't even know it had a center speaker. Since I've had the truck I've never heard a sound from that middle spot. I always thought maybe there was a speaker under there that just maybe was fried or not hooked up. I will check that out when I take the dash pad off.

The center speaker was only for the AM radio option. If your truck came from the factory with a stereo, then it will just have the 3.5" speakers. I suppose it's possible that if a dealer upgraded the radio from AM to a stereo they could have left the center speaker there, but it would not be hooked up to anything.

Ditto on 454HO's comment. If it has a stereo, it only has 2 outside 3.5" speakers. The center won't be there unless it is AM only.

I have a factory AM/FM radio with three speakers in the dash, circa 1983.
