New pic on last page!

We all put some hard time in on my wife's 68 swb this weekend. This truck was red Friday afternoon! While my wife and son were running sanders I was switching between bodywork and fabrication. Everything is ready now for the 20 gallon S-10 Blazer fuel tank to be put in. The best part is it doesn't hang as low as other tanks, and the gas gauge even reads right! I'll finish bodywork and have it in primer by Thursday. In time for the big cruise in Branson Mo.

+1 on the S-10 Blazer tank install. I would also like to get the tanks out of the cabs of my trucks. I just always thought that the full size blazer tanks hung down a little low for my taste. ECE makes a sweet fuel cell that's up high but the price is on up there!

The truck is great, but the best part has to be finding a wife who understands the value of an old Chevy truck. My wife won't even ride in mine of course I haven't done much work on it yet. I bought her a new pair of BIG diamond earrings so she won't go crazy when we get the credit card bills for the parts I have bought. I love my wife and she is great but if she told me she wanted a 68 Chevy to restore I would probably fall over with a heart attack.

Well, it's only fair. I have an S-10 Blazer that I put a smallblock in and spent a lot of time and money on it. Then, summer before last I bought a Trans Am off E-bay and went to San Diego to get it. Then when we got back I did a little body work on it and painted it. (She did get a vacation out of that, does that count?) She decided she wanted one of these old trucks so, here we are. Fair is fair. And I've already redone the motor, trans, and brakes too.

It looks like you made a pretty good size cut on either frame rail and welded in a brace at the rear of the frame. Do you have any pics with the tank installed?

Okay, I was working on the truck all last week and got it in epoxy primer. Spent many hours with a long board. The fuel tank is in and looks good from behind, although if I did it again I would do a couple things different. First off the S-10 Blazer tank needs mounted with the fuel filler neck towards the driver side. With it on the passenger side it sits just in front of the rear bed crossmember. That's more cutting and a longer tube to bend for your filler. Also don't mount your filler cap onto the bed floor. The fuel won't drain fast enough and it takes a million years to fill up! I'll have to reposition it higher. Other than that it works great. I left the factory fuel pump in the tank with no problems. The mechanical pump will suck fuel right through it. The rear bed crossmember will have to be notched out, and in my case notched a little higher in the area right above the sending unit. The upper front part of the tank straps will bolt right to the frame after you drill holes. The lower front of the straps need about 1 1/2" spacers bolted to them to drop them down a bit. I cut a couple from square tubing. The rear frame crossmember needs removed and a new one put in place farther back. I used 1 1/4" thickwall angle and welded it inside the frame towards the bottom. That way you can still bolt your bumper back on. The top and bottom tank straps will bolt to your new rear crossmember together after you drill the rivets out of the upper straps and unfold the doubled up part. Then just enlarge the last hole. Don't forget to drill a small hole for your ground wire! Also, some 3/8" rubber fuel line slit lengthwise works good as an isolator to keep any parts of the tank from rubbing on the frame if you mount it that close. Here's some pics.

You said the truck was in primer??? So you cleared the primer, or is the last pic paint? Looks good either way.

So if I put in an S10 Blazer tank with the fuel pump in place, I can just run the mechanical pump and pull through the e-fuel pump. And later if I go with an EFI, the e-fuel pump is already in place. One of those two-birds-one-stone deals.

Yes, fuel pump in place, everything as factory, the mechanical pump will suck fuel right through it no problem. I'm pretty sure all 83-94 S-10 Blazers, S-15 Jimmys, and Olds Bravada have the same 20 gallon tank. Only 86-up will have the fuel pump in tank.

Ditto, we need a FAQ written on this. S10 Gas Tanks are SUPER CHEAP at the pull-a-part in Nashville. They are also plentiful.
