Headers on a manual truck.
So I decided to install some headers on my truck. Much to my surprise, they didnt just drop in. I ended up having to remove my starter, spark plugs, Brake booster, manual truck linkage, and wheel wells. My clutch linkage had to be modified and spark plug wires changed for clearance. In the end it would have been just as easy to remove the whole engine and install the headers with the engine out. Learned alot though.
I just cant wait till the headers rust up in 6 months and have to install new ones Next time im going with block huggers or tri-y's. |

Precisely the reason I wont be putting headers on my truck. I'll wait to find a set of vette ramhorns before I go through all that headache. Hope they work out for ya rooster.

no kidding, my hooker comps and super comps have both been a dream to install, pull out the plugs and pop em in. took about 2 hours to R & R both times. all i had to do for the auto was bend the linkage slightly and for the manual it was a complete bolt in.

i used hooker super comps on my manual truck, no interferance with the linkage at all. the pipe did have to make a imediate bend to clear the crosmember and the t-case but it wasn't severe. the super comps were the easier to install than the comps, but jsut a little.

I installed some headman headers w/ heat wraps
http://static.summitracing.com/globa...ed-69097_w.jpg on a 67 swb gmc w/ 327 engine and a 4-speed manual trans. The bastards would not just drop in. the clutch linkage would hit against the header pipes so i had to modify it(cut, reposition, weld). Removing of the starter and brake booster is fairly easy but I had never dealt with the clutch linkage. Special-K: I figure if im going to go thru all that trouble I might as well pay up and get some Tri-Y stainless steels. I had seen so many tutorials and pictures of them going in so easy. It seems that everyone elses went in with out ant trouble, does anyone know how I could of done it easier? |

When I did my flowtech's on my '71 I had to remove the plugs, starter, and clutch linkage also. I guess it wasn't that big a deal because that's what I was told I had to do to get them in, so I was ready when they got here. When I can get some better headers it should be easier beacuse the 3 on the tree is gone and the TH 350 is in.

I`d like to run tri-ys on my manual 4wd for torque. But,hesitate unless I can confirm they`ll clear the clutch linkage.I put Headman Torque-Steps in my GMC/auto with no problems. In the past,I`ve cut and repositioned the one leg on the clutch linkage. That`s a pain, but it works.I`m afraid to have them run straight through where the tube is for linkage. It looks like I`ll go with Hooker Super Comps next time I redo exhaust on that truck. Thanks Ryanroo,I know what you`re saying about the bend to get over the crossmember. Not a bad thing, though.
