Can anyone ID this rearend?! - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Recently bought the 72 Chevy and it came with this rearend. I have had the hardest time locating parts for it. Found 13" brakes for it, but can not locate the retaining rings for the hubs.

Any ideas?

It has 8 bolts in the cover with two on each side close to each other in line with the axle.

(Not the cleanest it could be, but it took me forever to remove enough mud to at least show the features.)

Thought it was an Eaton, but no one could tell me anything about it...

The numbers on the short side are: 3766686 (?) 28 "Wheel" D

Does that sound right?

Also forgot to mention that it is a dually, if that makes a difference...

I am guessing that it is a 1-ton Dually Eaton H072 That sound right?

HO74 (I think... might be HO72 as I get them confused with the HO52) then.

all dually I've seen with an Eaton have been HO7x.

It's not an H072/h11 as it does not have the ring stabilizer bolt on it.

Do you think someone swapped it in and converted it to a dually?

I thought all duallys were HO72?

That is not an HO72...it has coil springs. This is a C/20 isn't it? That would make it an HO52.
NO one tons came with coils, and the one ton is the only way to get an HO72.

Grendel, forgive me, I am having problems remembering your truck... is it the maroon GMC duallie witht he fleet bed and step side fenders attached? If so...yes...DEFINATLY an owner modified rig. No daulies came with beds... none in 3/4 ton trucks, and another point of interest... the extra tires were inboard of the hubsm not poutboard. The track width was i9ncreased by an inch or two instead of by a foot or so on the later rear ends found under daulies.

Do you mean the two hub washers that have a tab on the inside circle and slide onto the spindle to either insulate the bearing from the lockwasher or the locknut from the lock washer? If so, the dealer still sells them. For my '72 SRW H052, I recently picked up a hub washer at my local dealer:

3663658 Washer $5.25 each.

I can't say for sure that they will fit your dually setup Eaton. Take an old one with you. Have a good look at your lock washers, too, since the dealer likely carries them, as well. I couldn't find either at local auto parts stores.

I read that some of the HO axles did not have the ring gear bolt chingadera. Check out the bootie fab welding job mounting the springs to the housing. Looks safe, Id run it!!

Looking at the entire axle helps some.

Not sure why the coil springs were added, but they are not OEM or anything.

I was going to mention the non-original nature of those coils.They are added as auxilary to the leafs?It sounds like your question is answered.But,can we get more pictures of theaxle set-up and truck?

I wish I had the dually with the bed...

Mine is a dropped C10 these days, but I've had a few 67-72's in my life.

I went ahead add replaced the 3663658 WASHER $5.64 also.

I tracked them down at R.K. Chevrolet after calling around a bit.
It was a lot easier actually knowing what you are looking for and to be able to give someone a part number. Thanks alot 4x4Poet

Fortunately Grendal confirmed that it was an Eaton, so that I could at least stop looking up every other type.

It's a POS, but at least it's my POS.
LOL, just kidding, it's a truck that I bought to haul my little projects. It has come to be another one of my projects. My buddy that helps me (read: does most of the work) doesn't care too much for it right now.

I will take some pics of it, but it is nothing to look at right now...
