1 ton axles
I'm looking for a rear end to install in my '62 1 ton duallie. I'd like a 4.10 ratio,but a 3.73 would do. If it's a posi,I GUESS that'd be okay too. The reason I don't want to re-gear the one I have is it has a broken brake drum,and the drums on it are so big I can't use the 16" wheels I just got for it. Spring pad width is no problem,I can move them. I can travel as far as Reno,Salt Lake City,or Boise to pick one up. Price is an issue as I'm on a limited income (disability).

71 and up rears will take the 16" rims.The most common ratio is 4.10s for the 71-72s but some had 5.14s.

Thanks for the info. I'd heard so many different things about this I wanted to be sure before I put any money into converting. If it's the way it used to be,a truck with an automatic would be less likely to have the deep gears,wouldn't it?

no, actually autro and 4 speed would get you the 4.10 gears in most cases, BUT theres a catch, the smaller engines prevented 4.109 form being installed, in most cases with most models,
combos such as 350 with 4 speed or th400 were almsot always 4.10 but if you came across a 250 with a 3 speed then it would be base ratio, IE 4.57 but thats only if its not special ordered differently, and if was avaialble for that engine tranny combo its all a gamble 5.14 was only avaialable with R05 dual rear wheel conversion package which also came with roof marker lamps and side marker lamps and spare carrier delete, but was not always put in as there are lots of 72 older R05 trucks with 4.57 such as my 72 c-30 for example you will have to look on outer edge of the ring gear to find out ratio, otherwise it is all speculation good luck |

Thanks for all the info. I found an axle from a "70 Suburban with a 350/Auto;it's a 4.10 ratio. It's also a coil spring rig,so I took the pumpkin out ans istalled it in my truck. I won't be able to run 16's on the rear,but the 17.5's I have are still about 80%,so I should be good to go for a couple of years,anyway.(HMmmmm--I wonder if I could swap the drums/hubs/backing plates from the 'burb onto my truck??) Any input on this idea? I did find that the '70 axle's shafts are about half a foot too long to use in my housing. But,my truck goes down the road fast enough now for me to notice I have a wheel seriously out of balance,so I'm happy with the gearing now-3400 rpms at 75 mph.
