Question HO72 Hub Bearing R & R?

Has anybody replaced the inner and outer hub bearings in an HO72 Rear? I had a bitc$ of a time removing the bearings and race from my hubs this past week, and it appears that it will be tricky installing the new ones? I basically had to 'beat to death' the outer bearing to get to the race, and oh yeah, what's up with that strange inner lock ring that goes in back of the outer bearing and race? Is all of the install better done with a press than by hand?

Thanks for your help,

A press and freezing the bearing cups before the install will help. Put the cups in the freezer the day defore you are going to put them in, this will shrink the OD of them and make it a little easier.
