83 manual 4speed w/od??? worth looking at???

found a boneyard (but complete) 83 that has a 4speed but 4th gear is overdrive... looks to be int he same position as a muncie would be witht he side linkage, but with an overdrive instead... are these good, bad??? it is behind a 305, but it looks to be all factory, including the knob, lever, boot, etc. the rpo sticker is gone thoguh so i cant tell by that what it is...ive seen ALOT of trucks, but none with that looking trans.... going back the yard saturday.. lemme know if its anything to think about...

I have one I haven't installed yet. This trans is in the Chrysler A-833 family. Most folks on the board seem to have a low opinion of it. The Chrysler guys seem to like the A-833 though.

Sounds like it would be a good swap into your '70.
If I could ever find one in a JY, I'd keep it until I get my hands on a 2wd project.

I have one in my 81 pickup, it came as original equipment in GM's fuel economy package, ESC 305, 4spd OD, and 2.56 rear gear. I swapped my gears for 3.08 and have plans to go with 3.73's. I've also heard that the same trans was available behind the 454's in a pickup, but I can't confirm this. It's a good trans in my opinion, they mated them to a 12" clutch. GM referred to the trans as a MY6. The OD is .73. I have an old road test from a magazine from back in 1981, if there aren't any copyright issues I can scan and post it.

what kind of mileage to you get? Does it clear the stock bench seat, I assume it does since it was a factory installation.

DC used them behind I6's and 440's fairly wide range in thier apps. Ive never seen one behind a 454. If you do some digging in the drivetrain/engine fourm theres pics of one installed into a 73-86.

well i saw this and i had heard about it b4 but never seen it, then went with the 2004r behind the 305 i swapped into my 74, I got tilt out of it and 2000rpm at 70, but i would have loved to swap onoe of these in... but i didnt knwo how strong they were, but ive toyed with the idea of buyinghte whole truck so i had all the parts when ever i decided to do a swap into another truck... there is nothing else special about the truck though.. very basic package, carpet but no real comfort/convenience options... just neat to have a four speed that has an o/d and somehting i could put an old school hurst comp plus shifter on it!!!! but what is it worth????any opinions...

Depends on the buyer like anything else. I wouldent pay more then $100 for a used manual transmission unless its a T56.

It used to get in the lower mid 20's on the highway. I installed a cam, headers, and richened the carb jetting and the mileage decreased considerably.

The shifter clears the seat without a problem. The shifters were manufactured for GM by Hurst.

well i went back to that boneyard again, and asked what he wanted for the whole truck.. came back with $350... said it is a running 305, and it will get around on its own, butt he throwout bearing makes a fiar amount of noise... looked the rest of the truck over and looks like only other real good parts are the bumpers, chrome sport front and rear and very clean.. but like i said in earlier posts, no other options or goodies... 305, 2bbl, ps, pb, and thats bout it... i think im gonna take it once i get the trailer back i had been borrowing, figuring the 4 speed is hard to come by, but its an honest but not screamin deal... any one with me or against me???

How many miles on the trans and what kind of condition is the shifter in?

They used DextronII for trans fluid in them.

I guess the bonus of getting the whole truck is getting everything else that goes along with the trans, like the flywheel, bell housing, cross member, drive shaft, clutch linkage etc.

Yea $350 for the whole truck running isnt bad. You could probably make your $$$ back out of the deal and end up with a free 5 speed and change.

The A883 that has overdrive isn't the same as what was used behind the 440. It is the same tranny that Dodge used in it trucks that have a rep of being weak. They were mostly used in Diesel apps. They never came in a pickup behind a 454 (last year was 1979 for BBC) or 350 (1980 was the last year for the 350 until 1987 in a 1/2T pickup).
