Think I screwed up.... Floor Welding - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I got looking at my floor pan patch tonight, and it looks like I may have screwed up and welded it too far away from the rocker. Now that I look at it, it looks like that dished in piece is actually supposed to sort of go under the rocker. I assume I would have to remove the old rocker to properly install a floor pan patch for when I do the next side? How would I solve this problem? Cut it lengthwise then weld a strip in?

I may be worrying over nothing, I'm not really sure. I checked with the old carpet trim, and it will still cover, but barely. I assume this is more than just a visual problem though.

Anyone have any suggestions as to what I should do? Thanks!

It looks like you will have to make a cut and weld in a filler patch. On the other side, do the rocker first with the inner rocker in place. The great thing about metal is that no mistake can't be undone. It looks like the flat piece going up and down should be flat againt the inner rocker. Nice welding though.

The dished in or stepped down edge goes under the kick panel. You literally shove it under the kick panel and align the lines of the floor back from there. I'd cut out the whole floor patch and use another patch panel, but I'm no expert.

Certainly one could weld in a strip to move the floor outer edge farther outboard. I don't think you have to remove the rocker so long as you can slip the floor stepped down shelf under the rocker. I drilled holes in the rocker to fillet weld the rocker to the floor patch step. The factory spot welded the rocker to the floor step. The sill plate screws into the top of the floor above the step, not the lower step as pictured.

I don't have a digicam. Could someone post some pics of the proper fit of floor to kick panel and rocker? TIA.

On my truck which appears to not have had any rust repairs done to it the distance from top edge of rocker to the step (vertical part) of the floor is 12-13 millimeters or a half inch.

I think I'm going to attempt cutting it and widening it. If it doesn't work out I'll just remove the whole mess and start over with a new patch panel, they aren't too much money, and I'll just tack it then decide, so cutting won't be so hard. Thanks for the help and the pictures!

I cut it today and widened it 1 3/8", and now it all fits perfect! The welds are good and strong, so I'm going to use it. Thanks for the help everyone. Tomorrow I weld in the rear piece and then on to the passenger side.
