Power steering pump Question?

Are all the power steering pumps the same for short water pump vs long water pump? I have a March SWP bracket and wanted to get a pump from the j-yard and they all seem to be for LWP. If I take the bracket off the pump, and put mey bracket on, will it work? Is there a pulley difference (besides key way, non keyway, adnsingle/double groove/serpentine, metric, o-ring, and remote resevoir)? Thanks for the help guys!!

Re: Power steering pump Question?

I think the only difference is the brackets ...

Re: Power steering pump Question?

I don't think they are all the same. I had some belt squeal issues, and finally tracked it down to the power steering pump not fitting correctly in the brackets.

It was the short water pump style, and when I got the new pump, it was clearly different in the reliefs molded into the body where it attaches to the brackets.

The old pump was not fitting in the cradle exactly right, and was causing the pulley to be slightly crooked. The new pump fit perfect and all the squealing was corrected. Hope this helps.

Re: Power steering pump Question?

Now I'm even more confused. I don't know if the recesses will matter because of the way the bracket mounts (very simply munts to the two outside bolts on the pump). I am almost stuck. I can get one off a lwp truck at the local salvage for 20.00, but it has brackets and all, but the hoses are bad. I only need a pump, pulley, and hoses. I don't know whether to get a two groove or single groove since I don't know which will line up. I'm so confused!!

Re: Power steering pump Question?

When I converted I wasn't sure either, but I went with the two pulley (I think in case you have air) and it worked great. I also matched the years of the pump and gearbox together (mid-80's)

Re: Power steering pump Question?

Okay, talked to cpp this is what they said. SWP/LWP, no difference in power steering pump. Bracket only. Up to '77 uses flare, '77 up uses metric or o-ring. Pulley doesn't make a difference. So I guess I only need a puley now.
