GMC or Chevy

OK guys, I need your opinions.

I'm building my 68 pickup, and need to decide whether I should put a GMC or Chevy grill in it.

I like the GMC grill. I have a couple of concerns about going GMC though. First I would have to buy a new grill, headlight bezels, and hood latch components. And then find a GMC core support. I would have it painted to match the rest of the body color (like I have on my 72)

On the Chevy grill, I would have to buy the grill itself (since they make them now). I have 2 NOS trim pieces that go around the opening as well as the headlight bezels. I also have 2 chevy core supports. It would of course also match the body color.

I'm a little more fond of the GMC grills since I've owned my 72 for 10 years and have gotten used to it. I do like the 67-68 chevy grills too.

So what would you do?

Re: GMC or Chevy

I like 4 eyes, but dont like crossbreeding (chevy to gmc grille, or vise versa) but dont mind cradle robbing (80s truck with 70s clip, any small journal 327 in anything)

Re: GMC or Chevy

I've got a 72 jimmy...I thought about going back to the GMC front clip, but I like the '70 Chevy clip it has on it...So,I'm keeping the chevy look.Besides, the original paint minimal rust chevy tailgate wouldnt look right on it with the GMC front clip
Chevy for me..

Re: GMC or Chevy

well, I've done the chevy to GMC conversion, and since it was a 70, I don't regret it one bit. Personally, I feel the 69'70 if butt ugly, CLOSELY followed by the 71/72.
Now the 67/68 GMC grill, is beautiful, but the past 2 years or so, I've been leaning towards the 68 chevy.
You have a tough decision.
Don't forget little things like chevy verses GMC badges, hub caps, horn button, and the minor tailgate detail.
Mine is finally all GMC with the exception of the VIN. (visually, not mechanicly)

i can't bring myself to vote

Re: GMC or Chevy

My vote goes for staying with what the truck is...

In my opinion Chevys should be Chevys and GMCs should stay GMCs.

The only exception might be if you absolutely can't find parts for one or the other..

btw: I've got one each and like them both.

Re: GMC or Chevy

I think the Chevy has a VERY CLASSY look to it. I have always thought of a GMC as the 'work' truck. JMO

Re: GMC or Chevy

I voted GMC since that is my preference, before I read that your truck is a Chevy. I agree with 68gmsee that Chevy should stay Chevy and GMC should stay GMC.

Good luck with your project.---Later---DAC

Re: GMC or Chevy

It's your truck and in the end you will do what pleases you and seeing how you get the bill this is the way it should be. A side from that I like 2 eyes as well. One member here said that he thought of GMC'S as work trucks and I agree with him. That is another reason that I picked a GMC for my project .... I wanted a tough poor boy hot rod, a working mans fixer upper.

Went for a cruse today with my better half .... 1st and 2nd gear rubber sounded nice along with the smell of fresh rubber off my new T/A's.

esll,

Re: GMC or Chevy

My favorite grill is the 67 GMC, but I like two head lights. The 69-70 Chevy is my favorite on the Chevy side but it still takes the back seat to GMC, because the GMC is better looking.

Re: GMC or Chevy

since there both really nice choices, I would make it what it is...that way you dont have to tell people...well actually its a Chevy...or GMC... or if you ever decide to sell it, explaing it, maybe a turn off.

no badges, no hub caps. The only hint of whether its a chevy or gmc will be the tailgate and grill.

My 68 GMC has rear leaf springs. Not sure if all of them came with leaf springs, but if yours has springs then classic truck owners will know the difference.

I say GMC just because you don't see as many of them.

Re: GMC or Chevy

I have a 67 GMC that now has a 67-68 Chevy grill. The GMC grill was bad and I really liked the looks of the Chevy so thats what it is now. The tail gate is still GMC so it depends if I'm coming or going on what kind of truck I have

Re: GMC or Chevy

When I first started collecting these trucks I was pro chevy mainly the 67/68 fronts. I have always liked these the best. Recently I purchased a 72 Jimmy and now I have to say I like the GMC grill allot. My opinion is that the 67/68 looks very classic and smooth. The grill is so simple and clean. I prefer these grills on the trucks, especially the short bed, 2wds. I think the GMC grill is more tough looking, kind of menacing in a way. I prefer these grills on 4x4's, even better with a lift and large mudders.

Re: GMC or Chevy

I can't decide based on looks since they both look great IMO

I'd just do it how I do most decisions "Which one is cheaper?"
