Okay, how does this thing come off? i bought a new liner

and have been trying to see how to remove the latch. I have included pics so you can circle some hard-to-describe parts if necessary

crap... i misspelled on the heading... now i look stoopid

thats a good question, mine fell off one day so i picked it up and put it back together, well i never could get it apart again, so , i just went and got another glove box door.

i just need the thing to fall apart so i can put it back together!!! the PO cut the bottom plastic 'hinge' where it bolts to the dash

I think you have to stick a sharp object in that little slit and push in on a latch that holds it on. I went through this onece before. Took me a while but figured it out. The people at Texas Auto Salvage didn't even know how so I figured it out myself and they had been working there for umpteen years. duh!!!!!

Can you get it off without prying off the chrome knob part? I pried one off one time and it won't stay on any more, it just falls off whenever you hit a good bump.

I replaced mine last weekend... there's a release pin on the inside of the latch that you can take the chrome knob off with. When mine came out it came with the knob and the interior shaft.

Then I unscrewed the ring behind the lock, which separated the front from the back. The whole thing took like 10 minutes. Great pics though - would have been nice to have instead of fumbling around like a dork test fitting it!

i couldnt get my lock ring off without taking the knob off... but yours may be differrent

You do NOT have to pry off anything. Not the Knob. Not anything.

Here is the correct way of removing it without damaging any parts.

It can not be disassemble using the correct method with the latch in the open position.

For key lock latches:
Lock the latch with the glove box open.
Use a straightened paperclip in the top hole (the hole pointing at the passenger seat with the glove box open) to push and release each of the tumblers one by one as you slowly remove the cylinder assembly.

For non-key lock latches:
Latch the latch with the glove box door open.
Use a straightened paperclip in the top hole (the hole pointing at the passenger door with the glove box open) to push and release each of the tumblers one by one as you slowly remove the cylinder assembly.

Then you can unscrew the round piece from the outer side of the glove box door.

I don’t mean to steal anyone’s thunder.

Some things are so easy when you know the tricks or methods to do, and I hate to see someone breaking parts to do it the hard way.

Some of you guys have some very nice older trucks. Where I live you just don’t see many older trucks on the road and you sure can’t find any that are not rust buckets that anyone will sell for a price I would be willing the spend on one.

Around here it is getting rare the see anything older then the 1988 & newer body style in the scrap yards I go to.

I know this is an old thread, but ChevyTech's advice helped me out - thanks! Adding picture that several others asked for. My glovebox was already out of the truck when I removed the latch, but I'm pretty sure I had better access to the tumblers when it was un-latched (as shown in picture). After removing the handle, unscrew the entire rear latch assembly. You can see how its threaded on in the picture.
