Anybody use a gear reduction starter? I saw them at the local Chevy dealer and was wondering if they are worth the extra $$

I was concidering one for the BB when I get it done.

Blazerboy was discussing these with me and Barn9 a few weeks ago. He is a GM mechanic and had great things to say about them. I believe he is using one on his big block.

I don't know if I did that Drag and DROP stuff right or not, I've never done it before. But this is a site for a RACE starter that is built for S.B. and B.B. putting out some horses with compression. I don't have one yet, But the key word being YET...

Try ebay under [mini starters], I got my ac delco with a year guarantee for 99.00 ,these starters use a shorter bolt so it's best to get the bolts for a few extra bucks, I can remove and install this starter with out loosining a header. This is the starter that comes with the 502 crate motor, has plenty of torque to spin my 383.

I have one, although diff than pictured above.

Mine is similar to ones used on toyotas. It works great. 5yrs on it, and been installed on 2 motors, hasn't missed a beat.

Worth the $$ IMO.

The gear reduction starters work pretty darn well. Here is a shot of one together and one not... Uses a planetary gear system. A plastic planet and three metal sun gears attach to the shaft. Can be found on most 5.7 SBC after 96 and is available for 153 and 168 tooth. Also I have used CVR Nippondenso starter motored mini-starters with great success.
Here are the 4 variants. One on the right is same as one of the others but 153 tooth. Offset pattern is all 168. The smallert one, (2nd from right) is from a 4 cylinder. These are all painted black because they are out of boats. The gear ration is different in the "little" starter as well.
