Glove Box replacement

Does any one know how to remove the locking mechanism on a glove box? I just got a donor glove box for my 82' but can't seem to separate the box itself from the metal door.................

Re: Glove Box replacement

Do you have a locking one or is it just a latch? Let me know and I can take a look at mine to refresh my memory I just had mine apart a month ago.

Re: Glove Box replacement

orangeanimal,

Just the latch. I saw a post on here awhile back and printed it out but, I think I either lost it or my wife threw it away

Re: Glove Box replacement

I just did mine (non locking) a few weeks ago.

Just gently pry the lock portion out of the housing (I'm talking about the chrome knob: you can either pry under the chrome part or you can pry at the base of the latching mechanism). Once that is out then there is a threaded lock nut on the metal (glove box door) side that you unscrew from the latch housing and you are all set.

Make note of how it all comes apart because you will have to put it back together and get the spring wound correctly so that the latch works when you slam the glovebox closed.

(It's not as hard as it sounds here).

HTH -

Re: Glove Box replacement

A copy and paste of my response to Keiths very same question in his own thread

Guys, taking the latch off is super easy.

All you have to do is unscrew it from the inside of the glovebox liner. The actual knob has to be in either the open or closed position, I can't remember, but the inside latch will only spin in 1 of the 2 positions. When unscrewing it, simply pull back slightly, away from the knob...and it will simply unscrew.

No tools required.

I have dont no less than 10 of them this way, worked every time.

Re: Glove Box replacement

damn that simple huh? I couldn't figure it out to save my life so I just broke the chrome "handle piece" off. Oh well time to order a new one...

I have only done the one, but I did it about 50 times...

(putting it back together - and getting it to work right - was harder for me than taking it apart).

Thanks bigblock73. I will give this a try. I could figure out how to do it once I started trying to replace my current box with the donor. You wouldn't happen to have the template you used for the factory speaker pods you got from Russell would you? I just pulled the same set up off of a 80" Surbuban that I am going to put on the donor doors (77' vintage) on my 82'

Thanks,

Mike

Mike, I don't have a template, but if you PM Russell, he might still have them hosted and might be able to send you a link. Try that first, if no luck, I can measure mine for you...but Russell had some nice clean pics for me to go off of.

Thanks bigblock73. I still have the original door panels from the Suburban and started working on a template last night. I am trying to figure if it would be better to make it from the inside or outside of the panel. I will try Russell and see if he can help.

Re: Glove Box replacement

I know this shouldn't be this hard.....I have done it before but can't get it to come apart. I can get it to unscrew but it is still captured. I remember something about you need to push in on something to get the knob assembly to come apart from the latch, correct. someone please help....
