Re: is my truck federal?

Do you have the engine RPO (either from the SPID label in the glovebox or is there an emissions tuneup label on the radiator support)?

Re: is my truck federal?

a federal truck can be smogged under less strict laws. the cutoff is i believe 1978 and all a fed. truck needs "i think" is smog pump and air injection tubes on the headers. and maybe cats.

Is there an emissions code on the SPID label? It would be an NA, NB or NC code (like NA1 or NB2 or something).

Cats would be required, as they were installed starting in 1975.

Engine RPOs are coded in the VIN. I'm thinking the reason he got all tight lipped is because he didn't really know what equipment would be required (he just read that the computer told him it was Federal emissions).

"Missing"

Could you get by with a hollowed out cat, or are they pretty strict on what the emission level should be?

On another note. Couldn't all of our trucks be considered "Federal" since the Government now owns part of GM?

Re: is my truck federal?

yea most places are pretty strict around here. they usually use an infra red temp gun to see if the cats working. but you have to realize i dont mind the cat... its the damn vacuum hoses, heat riser, egr, tvs, canisters w/ 6 different hoses going in and i could go on and on... im sure the '76 i had didnt have cats and it was a fed truck. has been a while though...

I've never had to have an emissions test in all of my 39 years.

Our '75 swb 1/2 ton 350 had a cat on it.

I remember specifically because it blew up and scattered it's guts all along the exit ramp...

Re: is my truck federal?

Wow! How bizzare! My '78 3/4 ton 4x4 FRANKENTRUCK did NOT have a cat on the ol' factory exhaust, nor is it marked "Cat" anywhere, as is my '76 Camaro. Sure doesn't seem like a P.O. could have removed it,...exhaust looked pretty untouched and there's no heat shield either. It WAS sold in WY.
Todd.

Or as for the SPID, you "replaced the glove box liner with a new one and couldn't transfer the label".......
