Size matters too.

The 3" 40-series I have are much louder than the 2-1/2" 40-series I replaced.

Re: Exhaust help please?

thrush magnum glasspacks are relatively quiet, quiet enough that I removed them in favor of empty muffler cases, but I'm running an xpipe.

I have glasspacks on my Blazer. Mellow at idle, loud at WOT. I'm not a fan of flowmasters. I think they are too loud, so there you go.

Flowmaster's get a bad rap due to their original two chamber design that is still their cheapest muffler available so it gets used a lot. I had them when they first came out and the car was definitely too loud. It would shake the walls of the house at idle and set off car alarms in the parking lot.

I bumped up to the 3 chamber versions and it got a lot quieter. When I installed tail pipes it got much quieter but maintained the distinct Flowmaster sound and with the H-pipe it mellowed out even more.

The ones I just put on my Malibu are 50 series SUV performance mufflers and it rumbles nicely. Not loud but not too quiet either.

Re: Exhaust help please?

So 68 does the Malibu have converters on it also or not ,I don't mean to steal this thread but i found a couple of 40 flows with stainless piping from a mustang (thought maybe they might be bent close enough to work) for $125 canadian and also the guy has a set of 50,s for $65 c and i,m getting older now..lol...and wondering if I should go with the 50,s but i don't want it totally quiet.I have a single 40 on there now and l though i like it I sometimes i wish it was quieter. The 50,s are actually 2.25 in and out ,would it make much of a difference if i put 2 1/2 adapters on them ?

The Malibu is cat free. I would go with the 50's. They are still plenty loud when you get on it but at lower RPM & idle they are much quieter.

With the design of the Flowmaster you can just cut the inlet & outlet off further up the mufflers reducer cone to get to a point where it matches your tail pipe diameter. All their cases are the same and the inlet & outlet have a tapered reducer to get to what ever tail pipe size it is made for.

Re: Exhaust help please?

Be very careful when going to muffler shops and expecting them to have the muffler you want. There are SO MANY different Flowmasters. You have the 40, 50, and 70 series. In those you have the Original, DeltaFlow, Big Block, Super, SUV, and other sub categories within each series. Then you have different size inlets/outlets. Then you have different inlet/outlet configurations.

The bottom line is, unless you pick a real popular muffler, they probably WON'T have the exact one you want. Instead, if you say " i want a 40 series delta flow" and they don't have it, they will probably just substitute a normal 40 series thinking you won't know the different, or even not knowing in their own minds that there is a difference. Even if they do know, they bottom line is that you are there and they want your business.

My advice is to find out what inlet/outlet configuration will fit your vehicle, and order the exact mufflers you want online. Take them with you to the exhaust shop and have them install them.

I would go with Flowmasters Delta Flow muflers, either 40 or 50 series. The interior resonance is decreased and apparently the baffles are arranged inside to be less restrictive than the original design. I have the 50 series and I like them.

Re: Exhaust help please?

^x2

Order what you want, save some bucks and get them installed.

I like the 50-series SUV muffler. Smaller case than the big block muffler and not much difference in sound level plus they are less expensive too.

Flowmaster makes a nice set of mandrel bent tail pipes for our trucks too. For the $130 they cost you can barely buy the materials to do it yourself and it saves you a ton of fab time.

You can always use this as an excuse to get yourself a welder and a chop saw if you don't all ready have them and install the parts yourself.

I just put 2.5" duals with an H-Pipe and dual 50 series Delta Flows on my 82. It is a lot quieter than the 3" with the original 40 series. Took it in with open headers and left with the full exhaust (Dumped just past the rear end) and some cut outs I already had welded into it and the bill was $325. Depending on where you are in Oklahoma it might be close to you. Wolfe City, Texas

Re: Exhaust help please?

It's kind of a hard question to answer. Your version of loud would probably differ from mine. If you still want it real loud, but don't want the mind numbing echo in the cab, you could always straight-pipe it out the back with no muffler at all. Not good if your state does inspections, or if you wanna remain friendly with neighbors. Cheap loud would be header mount glass packs with no other exhaust if you have full length headers. Still rattles an echo in the cab though. Again, the neighbor thing. Flowmaster and Borla have a distinct tone. Supertraps are expensive, but have a sound all their own... and are tuneable. Another option would be cutouts. They are like a Y-Pipe you control (either by cable or electric solenoid). In one position, the exhaust goes through the exhaust system. In another position, it's open headers.

Re: Exhaust help please?

look at hooker's aero chambers. they arent quite as loud as a 40 series but still have a great tone. On my small block truck, i ran 2 1/2 pipe off the headers with a x pipe into 2 40 series flowmasters with full tailpipes and it quit setting off car alarms.
