Factory hub caps on aftermarket wheels?
I have a '79 1 ton with the stock white painted 8 lug wheels and Chevy hub caps. Somebody replaced the back wheels with 16" instead of 16.5, they're just cheap white painted steel wheels. I have the full set of 4 caps, is it possible for me to attach them to the aftermarket wheels? If I hold the cap up to it, it almost matches the front wheels. I'm just not sure how I'd attach it? And, would I have to have the tire/wheel rebalanced?
I'm going to get a new set of wheels and tires eventually, but for now I want to spend all my cash on the engine. |

Sounds like you would be better off hitting the local new/used tire and wheel shop to see if they have any thing to fit your needs.

Re: Factory hub caps on aftermarket wheels?
I have an idea but need to make sure we are talking about the same cap. Can you post a pic of the wheels and caps in question?

Re: Factory hub caps on aftermarket wheels?
Gm made 16" wheels for the 3/4 ton that use the dog dish hub caps. I'm assuming that is what you have?
No, the wheels are not balanced with the hubcaps on.

Re: Factory hub caps on aftermarket wheels?
I have both split rims on the 74 and regular wheels (stock) on the 78. The hub caps on both will fit both, the split rims are 16in too, not the 16.5's, and I actually have the hubcaps off the 78 on the 74 split rims till I buy new non split rims for the 74.

(8 lug) Somebody replaced just the rear wheels with 16", probably since 16.5" tires are so expensive. The front wheels are original. I'll probably replace all 4 with 16s eventually, but for now I don't really want to spend any money on them. |

Re: Factory hub caps on aftermarket wheels?
There isnt a easy way... But metric studs from a newer truck have threads to attach the plastic nut to hold the factory cap on. thats the way my 98 2500 is. Not easy but possible Thats how my dad did his on a half ton
