250 or 327... help me decide please.

Ok, so I'm planning out a motor project for this summer (because I enjoy spending the day in 110" shops with 100% humidity in FL summers ) and I'm trying to decide exactly what to rebuild.

Let me preface this with - the original 307 is in my 72 and runs just OK, smokes and is a little soft. I am planning to rebuild it at some point, if even to only have on hand.

So, I was offered a 67 327, the block is machined and ready to go at 30 over (though I'll give it a once through) and the doublehump heads will need to be worked over, they're not done, though are present. Included is a new set of pistons and a rebuild kit.

OR

do I pick up a 67 250 - guaranteed rebuildable - from the junkyard.

I'm seriously torn here, the initial outlay differs by only a couple hundred bucks, both will likely need $3-400 in machining and another couple hundred in parts.

Can you throw some serious opinions at me about this? I had a 250 in my 68 and loved it, and the nostalgia plays in a bit (plus a general love for stovebolts) but the 327 sounds like a hot deal. I already have the 4bbl carb and manifold for it, was possibly going to put it on the 307.

Re: 250 or 327... help me decide please.

-I'm in the process of building a 327, hopefully with Vortec heads. I'm putting on my fireproof underwear here but if I was going to spend the money on a inline it would be a 292 not a 250...

Just my 2¢ worth...

One thing I forgot to add... I'm no teenager, but not quite an old graybeard yet either. I like to romp on the gas a bit occassionally, but 'go really fast' and 'burnin' up tires' don't really factor in as much as they used to.

I would stick with the 327 because it will bolt right in.. no need to find and change things like exhaust, motor mount towers, oil pressure lines and throttle linkage

Re: 250 or 327... help me decide please.

It seems most everyone prefers the 327. I love how some of these 6-cyl look, I think it's cool to do something a little different.

It you haven't seen it yet........this thread is great for some under the hood inspiration!!

Re: 250 or 327... help me decide please.

I'd say 327. You can use all the brackets off your 307. If your truck is an automatic & you have the 3.07 rear end it may be a little tall for the 250.

Re: 250 or 327... help me decide please.

Truck WAS a 3 spd standard, will be going back to a 4 speed Saginaw, though right now with the TH350 I'm in 3rd before I'm through a light... I need to find out what rear is in it, haven't ruled out swapping it out yet.

Good point on the brackets... add that to the expense column for the 250.

Re: 250 or 327... help me decide please.

I say 327, it'll drop right in and I'd rather have a v-8 anyday. I had a 305 v-6 and a 351 v6 before (those are more rare than the I6) and I have no regrets dropping in the 350 small block.

Re: 250 or 327... help me decide please.

You know this decision really goes right back to what do you want?? I personally like them all also. If you can find a 6 banger with all the ness. brackets and such. For the same amount as the 327. more power to ya to go that route.
If not, i would stick with the 327 for ease of installation.

I would definitely check to see what gear ratio you have out back. May be to low for any good runner, I personally like a mid 3's ratio 3:42 3:55, but most of these trucks came with 3:08 or 3:73's.

Re: 250 or 327... help me decide please.

The 327 will be way cheaper but the 6 with a few bolt ons will be way cooler.Performance will be some better with the 327 but fuel milage should be about the same either way.Kinda depends on what "YOUR" cool factor is.

id love to have that in mine

it really is up to what suites your needs

if you want some power and speed then go with the 327

if you just want to cruise and have an cool factor then go with the i6

i personally like the idea of both

Re: 250 or 327... help me decide please.

Vote 327 easier considering truck is already V8. and you may be convinced after trying to find all the brackets you might need for the I6. P/S brackets are fun to find these days.

Re: 250 or 327... help me decide please.

If I were going with a 6 I'd go 292, certainly.

Getting good fuel/air distribution means multiple carbs or FI on a six, whereas a single four barrel does great on a V-8.

You are also going to want more gears than stock-a 4 speed auto or 5 speed manual-with a six.

GM, Ford and Mopar built a LOT of V-8s for several very good reasons. The sixes never lived up to their potential in stock trim for those same reasons. All those furrin inline "motors" had multiple SUs or Webers or the cranky mechanical FI. Detroit gave up on multiple carb inlines around the time Marilyn Monroe married DiMaggio because Americans wouldn't synchronize carbs and put up with a mess of fuel lines.

But you know, a well set up six sounds great, whether a pushrod GM or /6 Mopar or a DOHC Jag or Alfa. If the bother doesn't bother you, be different.

Inline six with Offy intake 3 one barrel carbs with chrome dress up kit and machine head to achieve 9.5-1 compression combine with 4 speed and a 3.73 rearend and you have a nice little ride
