72 with rear leafs.
Hi guys,
Haven't been here in yonks since I sold my 68 but I'm now looking at a nice 72 short box styleside. It has rear leafs, I found some info about the fact that the leafs were available but the link and coil rear was an option but every C10 I've seen has the rear coils. Most of the parts catalogs don't even note any parts for the leaf set-ups. Any opinions on the rear leafs. And more importantly anyone have any pics or diagrams of the leaf rear set-ups. The truck is interstate and I'm doing my prelim inspection by photo's so want something to compare with to see whats been done as far as lowering is concerned. Any help is apprecieted, Mark. |

Brothers, CPP have quite abite of stuff for the Leaf guys. Even PhilsGMC has some items.

Leaf springs were definitely a regular factory option and are not particularly scarce. The leaf spring trucks normally used Dana rear ends instead of coroprate, and besides the obvious differences, some of the rear brake parts, like drums, are different too. This can cause a problem because a lot of chain store partspersons don't know about the difference and are hard to convince. When that happens, just tell them you have a GMC and you will usually get the right stuff.

Chevy's came standard with coil, leaf optional. GMC were leaf standard, coil optional.
When I've looked for parts, even at O'Reilly, Autozone etc they either ask which or in the description it says it is for leaf or coil rear. This is just a bit too much work for the kid behind the counter.

I love mine, especially since I don't have to bend pipe around coils. Between mine and my buddies coils, he thinks he had rather have leafs.

I like the coils, they don't hop when you spin, (pavement, gravel or sand) are easy to bag, never change pinion angle under heavy torque, and ride soooo much nicer. But they are sure a pain to get 3" exhaust around.

Sure glad to see that the forum still has active members with informative resposes. Your responses are exactly what I was after and Justin your build thread was perfect for what I need. I don't know if I'll be going ahead with this particular truck as although it is VERY nice I don't think it is as good as the current owner thinks and his asking price reflects his perception more than mine. I'll give it some more thought and no doubt if I do get it you will hear about it here!!! Thanks again for the input, cheers, Mark. |

I'll put it this way, in '73 leaf springs became standard equipment, and coils dissappeared.
