anybody know about 57 deluxe heater
I've owned this truck since 83, heater core leaked in 84, disconnected in 84, moved to Phx in 85, never fixed it. It's a deluxe heater, have a couple questions.
There's a hot/cold lever but there's no water valve in the box. there's something that looks like a valve but it's hollow, no parts inside. Also, there's no place on the box to mount a control cable for it if it was a valve. This truck is also missing the hot/cold lever since I had it. Is this some semi-deluxe heater deal? Anyway, had the core fixed, had a leak at the tank seam. cleaned out the heater box, re-assembled. It was really pretty clean, went together pretty good. Cleaned out the fan box, tested the fan, it's good. runs good, no noise, blows a LOT of air. installed the fan and heater, now the fan squawks like a bad GM fan motor usually squawks. loosened up the mounting bolts, jiggled it in case the box was stressed somehow, no help. Replaced the defrost hoses, OK. But not much air out the drivers defrost vent. Anyway to fix this? I spent time routing the hose so it's as straight as possible. Amazing to me, the fan switch was good. Any bright ideas? |

"now the fan squawks like a bad GM fan motor usually squawks".
Put some lite (3 & 1) oil on the bearing.

Re: anybody know about 57 deluxe heater
The heat control cable goes thru the box and attached to the heater valve which is attached to the heater core.

Jean-Marc
Thanks for those pics. That's exactly what I needed to see. Mine is missing most of that water valve. I'll post a pic or teo later tonight, I'm at work and don't have access. How does your defroster work? |

Re: anybody know about 57 deluxe heater
here's what I mean about the heater core. most of the actual valve is missing, what's left is hollow, no parts in there.

Re: anybody know about 57 deluxe heater
You can buy a new valve, they come up on eBay every now and then or from most truck parts places.

Re: anybody know about 57 deluxe heater
Nah, it would probably start leaking with my luck. I live in Phoenix area, only use the heater 30 days a year at most. I'll put a ball valve on the hot side hose.
The defroster deal pisses me off though. I think that corrugated hose kills the air flow. I'm thinking of using a piece of 2" exhaust pipe, put a bend in one end, use little short pieces of the hose at the ends. Wrap it with tape or something. Thanks again Jean-Marc. Wish I had your fab and body skills. I'm just an engine builder, dime a dozen. Last edited by tmoble; 01-19-2011 at 11:27 PM. |

Re: anybody know about 57 deluxe heater
Looks like someone had the same problem I had when my stock core puked a long time ago. I could not find a cheap replacement so got one that fit in the space and ran a valve in the input line. It was in the early 80's and stock heater is long gone so can't tell you what I used. Probably just took the original core down to the local parts store and the old timer behind the counter found one that fit. I remember having to modify the connections. I just lifted the hood to change the valve setting, usually just off or on.

Holy moly... your unit is exactly what mine looked like when I took it apart the other night. I just scored a deluxe heater from one of the guys over on the stovebolt site... and during the disassembly I found the same as you... Thanks to jean-marc for the pics as I could not make heads or tails out of the Brothers catalog (heater control valve). My truck had an after market heater (arvin ??) Where would I find further information on the proper installation of the deluxe heater (plumbing, wire, cables etc???). bb

Re: anybody know about 57 deluxe heater
I found out the DeLuxe heater works pretty good. I got the fan motor working good, thing puts out a ton of heat. Just right for those frigid Phoenix mornings when the mercury plummets into the high 50s.

Re: anybody know about 57 deluxe heater
I didn't yet. I just plumbed it straight. Too hot in Phx now for that so I'll disconnect it and re-install my temp gauge sender for the summer. Next winter I'll figure some way to run a cable operated ball valve. I might even try to find some way to mount it inside the box like that factory thermostatic deal so it look right. there's lots of these valves available in different configs, just have to sit down with it and figure out how to set it up.
