New Carpet/Sound Deadener Questions

What is required to put in new carpet? I would like to put Hushmat down first but I am not really sure how exactly that goes down either. Is there a pad that is supposed to go in between the Hushmat and carpet?

Does your hushmat has self adesive on the back? If so you need to clean the metal surface of the floor first. Then install the hushmat. If your carpet has jute backing on it then install the carpet by gluing it to the hushmat.

Re: New Carpet/Sound Deadener Questions

I do not have any of the materials yet. I just want to know how to do this so when I begin I can do it correctly. From what I understand Hushmat has a sticky backing and you put that over the cleaned steel floor.

What I'm not sure about is: Is there a carpet padding that goes under the carpet and on top of the Hushmat? Like how did it come from the factory? (I can't go check right now because I'm away from my truck right now, I'm in the college dorms) Also do I just glue the carpet down? Or is it simply held in place with the door sill plates and such? Thanks

Re: New Carpet/Sound Deadener Questions

If you buy the pre-molded carpet ie from LMC, that's all you'll need. No padding or glue required. You'll want to lay it out for a day or so in a warmer area to try and get the shipping wrinkles out of it. It's pretty straight forward. The hardest part is wrestling around with it trying to cut your floor shifter hole. Good luck!

Re: New Carpet/Sound Deadener Questions

It depends on what carpet kit you get. If you get it with the jute padding already glued to the carpet I would strongly urge you to glue it to the hushmat. Start at the center of the transmission hump and spray glue as you work your way to the door. This way you will not have carpet moving on you when you are driving.
If your kit doesn't have the jute mat glued to it then glue the jute mat to the hushmat first then glue the carpet to the jute mat. Again locate the mat down first before glueing to make sure it is located properly. Then fold one side back to the center of the transmission hump and glue 12 inches at a time working your way to the door. Do the passenger side first. It has the least amount of things in the way.

Thumbs up Re: New Carpet/Sound Deadener Questions

Dude(or dudette), I bought the hush mat from Summit, and if you're doing a complete job, order the larger size,or be like me and call back to order the second small one. The stuff sticks great, and you should'nt have to glue the carpet(got it from LMC) to the hushmat. Since I moved the gas tank to the back of the truck, I also insulated the back of the cab. I had a few pieces left, so I put them on the inside of the door skins. I have been working on this truck for 6 years, and I should be done soon. I truly believe this truck hates my guts, and flips me the bird every I go to the garage to work on it.Good luck with yours, and I hope it goes smoother for you.

Re: New Carpet/Sound Deadener Questions

Okay cool thanks guys. I asked for a high hump black carpet kit for my truck from Classic Parts of America for my birthday so I do not know if it has the padding attached or not. I really appretiate all of the advice. -Mike

Re: New Carpet/Sound Deadener Questions

Mike,

I purchased some sound deadner from "The Truck and Car Shop". Works really well under carpet. It is basically really heavy tar paper pre-cut to fit your truck. You just lay it down, then install the carpet over it. i used this same stuff on a '72 Nova I retored and it really quiets things down. Best thing about it is it's only like $40 bucks. http://www.truckandcarshop.com/trucks60_72/t60_028.html

Here is a photo of it before I put in the carpet.
