Question Lowering Coil Spring Rear Question!

Hey guys...i really want to lower my 68 c10...it has coils all around and is very stock...sits too high for me...a few inches higher in rear and lots of room between fender and wheel top..
Anyhow..I want to start by bringing the rear down as it will be easiest...
I'm wondering what size lowering spring (1,2,3 etc...) I should put on rear to kinda bring it so she sits level?
Eventually i want to lower front..but don't really have the money to do 2 in drop spindles and disc brake swap at the moment..and i really dont want lowering springs alone on the front as i've hard its hard to align etc.
any input is much appreciated..thx

Re: Lowering Coil Spring Rear Question!

What size wheels are you running? If you have larger than 15's I suggest a 2" block and add the lowering spring as needed. If you are running 15's then a 1.5" block will prevent scrubline concerns.

For the front you can cut 1 coil off of the stock spring for an economical drop. I would recommend an alignment with any changes you make in the front suspension.

Re: Lowering Coil Spring Rear Question!

The best way, is to get the lowering springs you plan to go with in the end, as it will save you money and keep you from buying springs again to go lower more to match the front when you do it. What are your plans for the truck? Do you eventually want to have a 4"-6" drop?

We carry the Hotchkis springs for the rear that drop it 6". That might be too much for now, but once you get the front spindles / springs, etc, it will be right on. Another option is doing the 4"-6" drop kit altogether from the start. Just some options....

Spindles are a slightly better route to go when lowering, but Hotckis has had good results with their 4" drop springs.

Rear 6" Springs

4"-6" Drop Kit

Yes, this is also a good option as well until you decide your plan exactly. Then, once your'e ready to do it all, you can replace with drop coils, etc.

Thanks Ken!

Re: Lowering Coil Spring Rear Question!

You should be able to get the drop block at your local auto parts.

Re: Lowering Coil Spring Rear Question!

It will still ride well.... maybe a little firmer due to the spring rate, but your truck will handle better. That kit will come with new bump stops for the front, and you won't have any issues aligning the truck. It is all made to work on that truck without issues.

Re: Lowering Coil Spring Rear Question!

You can use the stock panhard bar, but yes, new shocks will be needed as much shorter ones are required.

Re: Lowering Coil Spring Rear Question!

hmm sounds great...500 to do a 4/6 ...complete with shocks? ..since I cant really afford the drop spindle/disc bbrake swap..and this truck is only used to cruise around town now and then...i'm thinking this is the route i'm gona go...
Anyone do this 4/6 hotchkis drop on their truck? If so any pix or what you think of it...would be greatly appreciated...
I know most guys say go spindles..but i rly cant affor that route now.....
thx

I have never run Hotchkis products, but I can say I have never heard anything bad about them. I think everyone will tell you they are upper tier suspension components.

Re: Lowering Coil Spring Rear Question!

if you just use springs to lower rear without getting adjustable panhard bar the rearend will b offset and can cause clearance problems with tires//also a 6" drop in the rear may require shortening driiveshaft and angle shim for pinion angle

Re: Lowering Coil Spring Rear Question!

What is a good pinion angle for a truck with 5" drop springs and 1" blocks?

Re: Lowering Coil Spring Rear Question!

I've got 6" rear springs and the pinion angle was fine, drive shaft didn't have any length issues either.

Re: Lowering Coil Spring Rear Question!

You should be good. I have always understood that the pinion angle on the rearend, should be at the same angle as the transmission.

Re: Lowering Coil Spring Rear Question!

Ok thank you. I will be swapping in a new rear end and just want to make sure I get the pinion angle right. Putting the rear parallel to the trans makes sense.

Is there anyway you could find out what wheels, size, and offset and size tire this truck has?

Re: Lowering Coil Spring Rear Question!

I'm new to all the 2wd and Chevy thing. But I cut 1.75 coils out of the front. And built lowering blocks for the rear and had U bolts made for $14.95 pair at a local 4x4 shop. Which = out to be a 4/2 drop. I recently got Jeep wrangler springs for free from the same shop that made my U bolts and that should give me another 4" in the rear. So all in all for a 4/6 drop I'm into it $15 and a few Rainier Beers and some time well spent in the garage.

By the way after cutting the front springs I had my alignment check from a friend at a local tire store. And the truck was perfect. I'm also running 15" Stock wheels with 235x75.

235x70 tires. Sorry
Also here's a photo as it sits with the 4/2 drop. I will post a picture of it with the jeep springs after Memorial Day weekend.
