Need quick response, grease in rear wheel bearings?
Is it necessary to put wheel bearing grease on my new rear axle bearings? Aren't they lubricated by the 90wt gear oil?

If you have the proper fluid level it should lubricate the wheel bearing, but to be on the safe side, I would lubricate them before taking it out for a drive. Can't hurt.

No it is not necessary. Yes they are lubricated by the gear oil. I have read recently Dana/Spicer says to. I wouldn't worry about it. I never have. I think it's mainly to aid in break in. If your building a new rear end with a thousand or thousands invested I probably would. But I probably would change the gear oil out after about 500 miles anyway. I think the manual calls for white lithium grease so it will melt (disolve) into the gear oil. That's why you're suppose to use assembly lube instead of grease when assembling a manual transmission.

Re: Need quick response, grease in rear wheel bearings?
I have always greased the rear wheel bearings and have always had good luck and long life out of them. Works for me and I'll keep doing it. My .02

What I do is, refill your diff then jack one side up 4 or 5" for 5 minutes then lower it and jack the other side for the same time. This ensures you have some oil to the bearings. Cheers!

Re: Need quick response, grease in rear wheel bearings?
Thanks for the responses, I think I am going to throw some grease in there. I sounds like it may hepl prevent premature bearing failure, cheap insurance.
