How do I remove the HD carrier bearing?

My 3/4 ton has what appears to be the "heavy duty" style of carrier bearing, and I need to take it all off before I can powder coat the driveshaft (and I plan to replace the bearing).

If I could see the bearing, I'm sure I could figure out how to press it off, but I can't get to it because its enclosed in a rubber housing that is in turn enclosed by a metal carrier that bolts to the frame or crossmember.

The driveshaft also has a tin "cup" before the splined section begins, and I don't know if this will come with a new bearing or if I have to preserve, which might be hard on the press.

If someone knows the methodical and correct way to disassemble this, please let me know!

Thanks,
Dave

Re: How do I remove the HD carrier bearing?

I just cut mine off with a air grinder with a cutoff wheel. Just be really careful when you get close to the shaft. I used a hammer and chisel to break the thin bit left just before the shaft. As for the cup piece away from the splined side of the bearing, that is part of the driveshaft it self. The bearing and to the end of the splined side should all come with the new bearing. Oh and if your looking for a poly alternative to the 3/4ton carrier bearing I found that Inland Empire makes. Here's the link I'm ordering mine when I get paidthe end of the month.

This is the one that fits the 3/4 ton driveshaft part number 210866-1XS
The pedestal style does NOT FIT I already had to send that one back. See my post about the pedestal style not fitting

Re: How do I remove the HD carrier bearing?

Dave, Since the only times I've had to remove carrier bearings were to replace them on Chevy pickups I pulled the '70 service manual. Unfortunately it is super generic on carrier bearings in general and not much help. However there was a nice (again generic) section view of a carrier bearing that might be of interest. But I can't say I have ever had one slide off in a reuseable state.

Thanks Jim! Just lost half an hour of daylight there and still didn't get to the carrier bearing. Great reading though. Keep it up.

Re: How do I remove the HD carrier bearing?

I build driveshafts... we just put the shaft in a chain vice (to keep from denting the shaft) then hit the bearing race with a blunt chisel, if that doesn't work we use a cut off wheel. Don't worry about the sheet metal shields, they just hold dirt in.
But first we mark the bolt on yoke the rear shaft and the front shaft so it all goes back together the way it was ballanced!
Don't waste your money on a poly carrier bearing mount. A crappy rubber carrier bearing mount will last 40 years IF YOUR DRIVESHAFT IS BALLANCED. If you driveshaft isn't ballanced the poly mount will just transmit more vibrations to the chassis.
