4spd to 700r swap
hello, fellow truck members. I am in the process of starting a tranny swap. I've done the search function, but really could not find the answers I am looking for (if there is please post). OK here goes ... truck is a 84 gmc 2wd long bed 3/4 ton with a 4 spd (sm465?-3spd w/granny low). The rear end has removeable drums (not bolt on type). Now, here come the questions. Has any one done this swap? If so, what does this swap consist of ? I'm talking from end of crank to u-joint going into the rearend. Also cables, brackets, electronics, and mounts. THANK YOU for any info posted !!

Re: 4spd to 700r swap
After you remove all the SM465 parts, you need several parts.
Read this information: http://transmissioncenter.net/700R4_Swap_Info.htm Grab a driveshaft from a LWB truck. You may need the transmission crossmember. |

Re: 4spd to 700r swap
For your particular swap, read this backwards.
http://coloradok5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=265119 First understand what is required for a 700R4. Then find what you have and what you need. |

Re: 4spd to 700r swap
I would strongly suggest finding a crossmmember from a square that originally had a 700r4 in it. I just swapped one into my 77 in the place of a th350 and had to modify my crossmember to work.

Re: 4spd to 700r swap
You'll need a steering column and OD shift indicator for your cluster.
You'll also need the linkage from the column to the transmission including the frame mount with the spring and plastic ball. The TH350 / TH400 linkages will work. If you have the AT cooler in your radiator just pull the plugs out and install the lines. Most aftermarket radiators have them they're just plugged. Get the tooth count from the Speedometer gears in your SM465. Someone more knowledgeable could tell you whether they use the same output gear or not.

Re: 4spd to 700r swap
thanks hatzie, (or others) do you know if the front half of a driveshaft (from a truck with 700r) will mate to the rear half (my 3/4 ton shaft)?
