Key won't come out of ignition - park lever issues

Hello,

My 78' Chevy ignition key is sometimes hard to remove from the ignition. It's an automatic, and when you put the shifter into park, that's not good enough. You have to take your other hand and literally pull the lever 'more' into park. (to the left)

Seems like not so much of an ignition issue, but rather a column shift issue?

I'm trying to get some ideas as to what parts I may need before I start this project.

have you checked to see if the shifter linkage is hanging up or binding anywhere? would be easier then tearing into your column

Seems like you just need to adjust your shifter linkage.

check the bushings where the shift linkage hooks to column and transmission Check for any loose motion in linkage If no a simple adjustment to male shift rod longer should do the trick

I had the same issue just on my Chevy equinox, but it ended up being the tumbler in.the column. Im guessing all cars have tumblers. I could be wrong but I just wanted to toss that out there in case it is the tumbler. My key was stuck in the column there was no way to get it out. I ended up replacing the tumbler twice and that fixed it. Hope this helpers

On my truck the tilt mechanism is loose again so the steering wheel moves up and down kinda freely and to go all the way into park I have to push the steering wheel up and it will fall into place. If you have the "chevy" tilt there is a write up to fix it ill find for you that will walk you through how to tighten the column up
