5spd swaps

Truck is my 78 long bed. Right now I have in a 700r and its not bad. Its behind a stock 350 with headers and a edelbrock 1406 might have an I.take soon. So maybe 300hp on a good day when the planets are lined up. I had a m21 in one of my trucks and it was great but I don't want linked shifter and I want the extra gear for overdrive.....

So who has done a 5spd swap?

What did you use? I can get my hands on a 10 spline t5... can I use that?

Hhow much $$ did you have invested?

My plans with my truck are simple. Slowly build it on a budget I just picked up a 12 bolt that I'm slowly building up and prepping to go in. And the same with another motor so its all a "in time thing" no rush just wanna make sure its not a setup that'll waste syncros in a most or smoke the clutch in a month but will hold up to a 300-400hp Abc and your typical driving with occasional Saturday night specials

Re: 5spd swaps

I looked at a swap like this for my F100 project, and there are no car 5 speeds that will last if your going to stomp on it. The truck 5 speeds will last but well shift like a truck.

Aftermarket 6 speeds or the ones from the LT1/LS1 4th gen Camaro will work, but require shifter mods or are quite expensive.

If you plan to cruise the truck or DD with occasional loading a T5 world class will do alright.

Re: 5spd swaps

I used a T5 from a 1990 Camaro in my 74 C10 for several years with no problems. Pretty straight forward swap. Only the T5's are getting scarce.
My current daily driver is a 85 C10 with a 6 speed (LT1 T56) and its about like my 5 speed swap only with one more gear. Used the same clutch pedal/master cylinder/slave cylinder setup with both transmissions. I'm thinking the shifter hole in the floor was about the same place for both trans and i'm pretty sure I used the same driveshaft with both as well. Best thing I did was get rid of that BORING automatic transmission.

What did you do for the flywheel /clutch? Will the standard flywheels and clutches that were used for muncies and t10's work ?

Re: 5spd swaps

Don't forget the A833 option!!! Only a 4 speed but same ratios as the 700r and very strong. Just tough to find but they are out there.

Re: 5spd swaps

Will you have to cut the floor and put a hump for the 4 speed O/D to fit? Interested because I'm looking to do the same swap.
