Please help me ID this support bearing
I took my driveshaft into a shop today to get it checked out because of some vibration I was getting. They told me that the driveshaft support bearing has too much slop in it. They said that the bearing itself might be okay, but the housing it's in seems like it's worn and allowing the bearing and shaft to vibrate.
The problem is that I haven't been able to find this bearing anywhere. I know I can't be the only person with this setup, so it's been frustrating that I can't find any info about it. The truck is a 1970 GMC 1/2 ton 2WD. I should add that I don't have a press, welder, or anything like that available, so I'm not looking for a solution that involves fabricating new brackets or something like that. I'm hoping that this part is still available somewhere. Thanks in advance. Patrick Pics of my bearing, along with an (incorrect) replacement showing the difference in size. |

Re: Please help me ID this support bearing
2 different styles for the bearing. Look up on this website for the manuals they are here. You might be able to use the new one you have. Save all the other old parts, you would be surprised to see what is actually available through some of the sellers here and elsewhere.
It takes some looking, yet almost every part is still available today. |

I ran into the same thing. I used the newer style and built a spacer in the x-member to get it to the correct height

I have the smaller one that's on your shaft.
Recently I replaced mine, and ran into this thread that concerns yours. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=656307 Hope it helps. J.

Re: Please help me ID this support bearing
Awesome. Thanks guys. Especially for that other thread JCD. My searching skills on here apparently leave a bit to be desired.
I don't know why makes my truck so "special" that it got this weird bearing. I was really dreading having to build a bracket - I have so many half-finished projects laying around I couldn't bear the idea of starting another one. That other thread was useful because it talked about the rubber shrinking/disintegrating and allowing the whole assembly to bounce around inside the mount. That sounds like it's exactly my problem. I think the only remaining unknown is whether my mounting bracket is reusable, or whether it's worn out. I'm going to try to get it apart this and check it out. Fingers crossed. |

Re: Please help me ID this support bearing
I think you'll find it's just a heavy duty bearing carrier.
Replace the bearing itself, and you should be good to go. J.
