latest progress on my '68/'72
Here are some pics of the progress we made a couple of weekends ago. We relocated the tailgate handle and welded on a smooth skin. We filled the tail light holes, and welded in the rear roll pan. There is still a ton of dent pulling and straightening left to do on the rear, but it is coming along.
We had been thinking about ways to mount the gauges, in some other way than the standard bezel. Dad came up with an idea that I think looks really good. He welded up the hole in a spare glove box door, cut an opening for the steering column, and mounted the gauges and indicator lights in it. We will have matching billet knobs in it, those were all we had at the time. I told you earlier that I was building this truck with my Dad, so I am also putting in a pic of one of his early hot rods for your enjoyment. It is the car he was driving when he and my Mom were married, a '56 Chevy with '57 chrome, lakes, and turqouise and black paint. He said he'd like to build another like it, if I'd ever get all my projects out of his shop : )

That looks like some sweet body work. I like the bezel idea too. Interested to see it installed.

Thanks for the nice words. We picked the tailgate skin and the handle relocater up at Mar-K in Oklahoma City. The skin wasn't too tall, but it was a little too wide. We tacked it, then trimmed off one edge.
The tail lights came out of a junk yard, and were out of an early '80s Trans Am. They originally had three ribs of lens; I just sawed the top (most narrow) one off on a band saw and cleaned it up by sanding. When I took the top rib off, the reflector no longer fit, so we built boxes behind the lenses, and cut the holes for the bulb plugs the same shape as the originals, so the plugs still twist in and lock in place. The taillights were then mounted upside down in the roll pan, so the angle of the lenses match the angle of the sheet metal of the bed sides. If you look closely, you can see that I also cannibalized the tag light off the T/A, and mounted it above the license plate. The roll pan is a Sir Micheals I believe. The truck will be Viper Red, and we are figuring about 3 more good weekends of body work and we'll be ready for paint. For those that didn't see my previous pictures, the truck is a '72 cab and bed, with a '68 front clip, all mounted on the '68 frame, which has been lowered 4/6 and powdercoated. The motor is a .030 over 350 with a Roots type blower.

704x4,
I think we found the indicator lights at the Street Rod Nationals in OKC. Should be able to find something similar from some of the street rod vendors. Another idea is to use fiber optics for the indicators. From what I've read, they are easy to install, and not terribly expensive.
