Man, I just can't find out who makes them. GM, Niehoff, and now Carquest(Standard Motor parts) all use the same one.
I thought Pollak switches made them, but they don't.
YOu know, it's just one of those things in life that don't really mean anything, but you just got to know.......:banghead:

Do the older t-cases have a hole in them for installing the indicator switch? Or is that a newer truck only type thing?

They should have.
The switch just replaces one of the detent ball/spring retainer "plug bolt". Just screw out the original plug bolt, and thread the switch into the hole.

The switch activates a "4 wheel drive" light on/in the dash when you shift the transfer case into 4x4 range.
If a person desired they could easily use another switch in the other detent plug bolt hole for a "low range" indicator light.

BTW, I'm not absolutely sure I have the switch in the correct hole for a "4x4" indicator. I have to check that still to be sure. I just screwed it into the same hole the old one was in.

My '71 with a NP205 looks indentical to the one pictured. Today I ordered the Car Quest EC TCA3 (around $17 as stated before). It is listed for '80-'82 GM truck.

Now for my questions:

    Where does this gasket go?
  2. The switch has two plugs. Are they ground and 12V (how do I hook it up)?
  3. Has anyone confirmed that placing the switch in the pictured location will be for 4x4 indication and the other location will be for low range indication?

Update: Car Quest and Napa are sold out and can't get this switch anymore (it is discontinued). It is also discontinued at GM, but I got one of the last few still in the dealer chain stock. Hurry if you want one!

1. The gasket goes under the switch just like a washer would. It's not to big of a deal if you don't have one though, (like me... ). I'm just going to make a gasket out of thin gasket material and put some gasket sealer on the threads themselves.

2. Good question. Dunno myself. I'm guessing it would be just placed in the ground side of the circuit in series.
Positive from 12v to the light and negative from the light to the switch to a ground.
I'd think it would be easier if it would just ground through the body of the switch itself and only use one wire but I guess the designers didn't think that way.

3. Still haven't confirmed which rail is which yet. If I get a chance I'll do that and post it back here.

On an update of my own, I finally got the Advanve Adapters adapter kit to mate this 205 with my NV4500!:metal: :aiiet:
Now I just have to order a few parts for the NV4500 and I should have 99% of the parts for the swap!
To bad I'm basically out of time this spring, (before I go back to work), so the swap probably won't get done until this fall.:( :(

Re: Few pics of my NP205 rebuild

OK I have some questions. I have just removed my cab and body from a 72 K10 and I am cleaning my transfer case and 4 SP tranny at this time. Why do you have a switch if you don't have a light? I see that there is a switch on my transfer case and I unplugged the wires to it. I have no idea yet if there is a light on the dash but I would guess there is otherwise why the switch? Second how hard was it to rebuild the transfer case, cost? I am thinking of rebuilding my 4 speed also, it popped out of third a couple of times last time I drove it. I was told it could just be the shifting fork but I have never had a manual tranny apart before. The NV4500 you are talking about is a newer Chevy 5 speed? How hard and expensive is it to make the swap? Thanks I love this board!

There are video's that show how to rebuild 205's. there are complete rebuild kits available. Search the internet or look on ebay.
check out this site:
http://www.okcnetworks.com/bronco/205/np1.htm
not sure where the light is forb a 72. The 73-87's are in the dash cluster.

Re: Few pics of my NP205 rebuild

Nice site, Thanks. I don't think my transfer case is in bad shape but was curious as to how hard it was to rebuild. I see there is a lot of parts in there!

I didn't think the light came until later? My 1971 does not have it, and the Napa and Car Quest books list the switch for '80-'82 only.

Good work. Your 205 has a different shift linkage than mine. The flatbar piece that goes between the shift forks/shifts the t-case is different. Linky: http://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vboa...d.php?t=194567

My '71 also has this style.

I've seen other t-case's with linkage like mine and linkage like 454 72 4x4's. As long as it works.

Re: Few pics of my NP205 rebuild

I thought having this indicator light switch would be neat since 2HI and 4Hi stick positions are too close together for my taste. It behaves as an open or closed switch (and is not grounded to the switch body/T-case). I put the switch inline between a 12V supply and a light bulb which was grounded.

When it is in the driver's side hole (opposite the hole pictured) it is an open circuit in N, and a closed circuit (light bulb on) in 4Lo, 2Hi, and 4Hi.

When it is in the passenger's side hole (as pictured) it is an open circuit in 4Lo, and a closed circuit (light bulb on) in N, 2Hi, and 4Hi.

In other words I think there is no way to differentiate between 2Hi and 4Hi.

I give up unless somebody can point out something I've missed.

I work at CarQuest and I tried to find this switch. It's in our computer, but says there are 0 available...however, I can (and did) order it direct from the CQ factory. We occasionally have to do this for oddball parts. Its ordered, but might show up tomorrow, or in 2 months. When I get it in, I will report back.

Hmm, That doesn't sound good at all. I hadn't thought about it working like that.

Would anybody have a wiring schematic for a mid 80's truck/burb?

Re: Few pics of my NP205 rebuild

UPDATE: I found a '80 Blazer that was being parted. The switch does belong in the passenger's side (as pictured). I talked to the owner and he said the light indicated 4Lo and 4Hi. I found a plug from a mid-'80s Caprice cruise control transducer that works okay on the switch. The factory wiring diagram is as I described above. I'm still stumped as to why it didn't work for me.

Could it be that you need two switches in there hooked together somehow since both rails will move. On my Profab transmission in my pulling truck there are three switches in it to indicate, neutral and reverse. Here is a pic.

Anybody else try this and get it to work?

I used a thin homemade gasket with this test. I wonder if a spacer would make any difference?

Re: Few pics of my NP205 rebuild

For anyone interested, Collectors Auto Supply in Washington state (1-800-414-4462) still has the aftermarket TCA3 switch for $60 and the GM 14024304 switch for $90.

Has anyone added this switch to a NP205 that didn't originally have one and get this to work?

Re: Few pics of my NP205 rebuild

Hey guys, (I know this post is pretty old...) Classic Parts of America sells the switch. They have the part number as 53-633 for they say 81-91 K10 and K20, and 83-91 K30 (53-634). I'm guessing the switch would still work on pre 81 trucks though.

Part number 53-633 ($18.95) and 53-634 ($19.95)

http://www.classicparts.com/1981-91-...ctinfo/53-633/

Theres a link to their switch :chevy:
